Holland America Line Wins Eight Readers’ Choice Awards from Porthole Cruise Magazine in 2006

Seattle, WA, November 3, 2006 – Holland America Line has won eight Readers’ Choice Awards from Porthole Cruise Magazine for 2006, including “Best Eco-Friendly Cruise Line” and “Best Private Island” for Half Moon Cay, its exclusive paradise in the Bahamas.

Theannual poll of readers also voted Holland America Line the winner in the following categories:

* “Best Alaska Itineraries”

* “Best Canada/New England Itineraries”

* “Best Central America Itineraries”

* “Best Overall Facilities for Physically Challenged Passengers”

* “Best Medical Facilities”

* “Best Art Auction Program”

“Holland America Line is proud to receive these eight awards – two more than last year,” said Richard D.Meadows, CTC, senior vice president, marketing and sales. “The awards are especially significant because they are voted by discriminating, frequent cruise passengers. Winning “Best Eco-Friendly Cruise Line” is particularly satisfying in light of Holland America Line’s strong commitment to environmental responsibility, and winning Best Private Island” for Half Moon Cay once again reinforces our own guests’ top ranking of the island among Caribbean ports.”

"Porthole Cruise Magazine readers proved once again that Holland America Line is among their favorites," said Bill Panoff, publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine. "It's apparent that they're truly an industry leader and I congratulate them on all of their many wins this year."

Holland America Line won the “Best Eco-Friendly Cruise Line” award for its commitment to responsible environmental practices through a comprehensive, fleet-wide program and innovations. The program emphasizes waste reduction and recycling, compliance with all international environmental guidelines and use of cleaner-burning propulsion technology in the line’s new ships. Holland America Line’s ships currently meet or exceed all provisions of the international regulations governing the environmental management of marine operations.

Half Moon Cay won for the sixth time in a row for “Best Private Island” for the ultimate Caribbean experience it offers. Here guests can experience both natural wonders and enjoy the extensiveactivities and facilities offered in the 45-acre resort portion of 2,400-acre Little San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. Activities include surf horseback riding, a stingray lagoon experience, Kids Aqua Park and guided AquaTrax watercraft tour. The retreat also features an aqua-sports center with beach gear and water-sport equipment, Club HAL children's facilities, white sand beach for swimming, snorkeling and sailing, nature trails, and designated wild bird reserve.

Half Moon Cay is featured on all Holland America Line Caribbean itineraries and on Panama Canal cruises sailing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale.

“We are also very pleased to win “Best Alaska Itineraries,” as Holland America Line offered a comprehensive selection of 159 cruises in 2006,” said Richard D. Meadows. “These included departures from both Vancouver and Seattle, nine additional cruises to Glacier Bay National Park and unique new port, Icy Strait Point. Holland America Line has always offered the most entries into incomparable Glacier Bay National Park and most extensive Alaska shore excursion programs for guests.”

Holland America Line has now won “Best Canada/New England Itineraries” and “Best Central America Itineraries” two years in a row. Canada/New England cruises showcase the area’s historic seaports, international cities, stunning sights such as the Saguenay Fjord and exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing from May through October. Central America itineraries highlight Panama Canal cruises that include exotic ports and shore excursions in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

Best Art Auction Program?

I guess I'd hate to see a line where it was done MORE intrusively or obnoxiously! :eek:

And the "Best Handicapped Facilities" and "Best Medical Facilities" categories won't do much to help dispel the notion that HAL is a line only for old fogies...

Best Art Auction Program ????

The majority of the cruise lines use the same art auction company.

I am not so sure about Hal winning the the medical facitlites. What about the telemedine program some of the Princess ships have ?

When Ocean Princess debuted in February 2000, it introduced a telemedicine program linking the ship's medical center and staff to Cleveland Clinic Florida. Princess continues to expand its medical facilities, and the new Star Princess features fully integrated digital telemedicine and teleradiology systems. This innovative technology enables the ship's doctors to stream live video, voice and data via satellite to 24-hour on-call land-based specialists who can assist Star Princess' medical team with expert advice in managing complex patient cases.

Could they possibly be talking about the dentists? :rolleyes:

I used to get Porthole, but they have very few articles. It was more like 90% advertisements and 10% articles on cruising.:rolleyes:

Just fantastic. Kudos to HAL!

Amen! ... Especially for the award for Half Moon Cay. That's my little slice of heaven right here on earth and I hope HAL keeps it just the way it is.

Blue skies ...

Gizmo says he used to get Porthole Magazine.

I used to get it also, and gave it up rapidly, as it was much too slick for my tastes, and had very little substance.

Like several other posters, I don't think an art auction program is a plus.

Holland America Line, Inc. is and has been many steps ahead as well usually the leader in many procedures and what now is standard policies on other Cruise Lines and Craft.

The do lead and have led the way on environmental methods also.

A heads up on the ms Noordam IV Plug In Program.

When it does the transit to the West Coast through the American built Panama Canal , she is going to be retrofitted with the equipment in WA State.

Which will be less polluting and save money . The ship will be able to Plug In to the Electric at Port thusly allowing the Diesel Generators to be serviced as well have no emissions given while (whilst) in Port.. the cost factoring is currently about $5,000 USD/BM $ per port stay.

Acting local thinking global...and so environmentaly friendly too.

HAL is your pal.:cool:
