Questions: Visa and Flights

 We're planning on booking the 16 day Sourth American Explorer on HAL for early 2008.

I understand we'll need a visa for Brazil(Rio). How do we go about getting it (we're in NYC - can we go to the Consulate?). We'll be going out of JFK to Rio and then, at the end of the cruise, Santiago to JFK. Any clues about non-stop flights, best airlines, fares?? HAL offers airfare but does not disclose carrier nor will they guarantee non-stop or direct.

We went 6 years ago, but we saved alot of money booking our own air instead of going with HAL. We were on United, with a plane change in Miami both to Santiago and coming back from Rio. The HAL flights were on Delta, and the people who were with us and had these flights had their flight cancelled going home. They had to then fly from Rio to Sao Paulo, then catch a flight from there to the USA. I was so glad we had booked our own!!!
