Gift for people we will eat breakfast with in Russia

From what I understand - on our tour in Uglich, Russia, we will eat breakfast with a family. I hear it is customary to bring a "thank you gift" with us for the family.

 

I am guessing that most people bring chocolate/candy from home. I would prefer not to do this. Does anyone have any other recommondations or is it best to just tip the family with cash as a thank you.
