upgrades on river cruises

When taking a river cruise do you get the upgrades that are given on large cruise ships. For instance, if I pay for an inside cabin how much of an upgrade can I expect?

There are only a few river cruise ships out there offering insides (Deilmann´s MS Mozart does have insides). All US marketed river cruise ships have outsides only. As the number of cabins are limited and river cruises usually are booking quite well the chance of getting an upgrade is not really good.

All European river boats I have been on only featured outside cabins.

The all have either floor to ceiling sliding glass doors on the upper decks and windows which cannot be opened on the lower deck. All cabins are the same except the suites, which are bigger. I don't think that you can get free upgrades to a higher deck from anyone selling European river cruises. What you can get however are special discounts depending how early you make your reservation and for which dates. These discounts can be quite substancial and be worth more than a ffree cabin upgrade.

When we got on board our river boat (Victoria on the Yangtze), we were informed that there were four suites that had been unclaimed, if we were interested in upgrading. We snatched up a forward suite and it was incredible. When you check in, you might ask if an upgrade is possbile. Remember, the answer is always no if you don't ask.

We tried the on spot upgrade last year on the Europe's Heartland cruise, but the ship was completely booked and there was no way getting a different cabin. It seems that this will be even more so the case this year and also in 2008. Friends booked a Legendary Danube cruise for June 2008 on the Amadagio and wanted a C cabin and could not get one any more.
