hugger Posted June 7, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 7, 2007 Just received info on getting one of these in the mail today. It's not very clear in regards to how it works. Does anyone else have this? How does it work? Can you use the point for OBC? Being we book a Cat CC or higher we don't qualify for the one cat upgrade. Can anyone on CC fill me in? THANKS
IrisTattoo Posted June 7, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 7, 2007 I just applied for one. Have not got it in the mail yet. Sounds like you get 1 point for each dollar you spend on anything, and you get 2 points for each dollar you spend on Celebrity. So, if you pay for a cruise for $5,000, you should get 10,000 points. No annual fee. Teazer rate for converting other cards. Figured it couldn't hurt!
ecslady Posted June 7, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 7, 2007 I use mine for Celebrity purchases only, because you get the double points for that. I usually only accumulate enough to turn it in for a $50 - $150 on-board credit each time I cruise. And that's easy, it's done on the credit card website. I always call Celebrity afterwards to make sure it transfers and is showing up for that booking # and bring a copy of my confirmation of the transaction with me on board, just in case. :) BTW, Last year, they gave double points for dining too, but that was cut out.:( You can apply on line right on the Celebrity website. Follow the link for Specials.
chessbriar Posted June 7, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 7, 2007 Hugger, you can use it for OBC or $$$ off the price of you cabin depending on how many points you earn. You get 1 point per dollar spent. Double points on purchases with X. Once you get your card, if the price hasn't gone up on your cabin. I'd have your TA cancel the booking and get you the credit, then put in a new booking on the X card. $900 deposit is 1800 points.
nicaphile Posted June 7, 2007 #5 Share Posted June 7, 2007 Is it published somewhere what the points are good for (specifically) as in X points equals X amount of OBC?
HLN500 Posted June 7, 2007 #6 Share Posted June 7, 2007 I only need to spend $2000 more to get a free cruise for 2. Use it for X and when my other MC/Visa's are maxed. I don't use it for the little stuff since the free cruise is more bang for the buck.
Karynanne Posted June 7, 2007 #7 Share Posted June 7, 2007 Is it published somewhere what the points are good for (specifically) as in X points equals X amount of OBC? Bank of America is the card holder of Celebrity Rewards, World Points. We also use it for Celebrity bookings and expenses. And for quite a bit of other expenses. Right now we have 70K points, which I'll redeem for onboard credit for our B2B Australia/NZ cruise next Feb. For each 5000 pts., you can receive $50.00 onboard credit. The onboard credit can be used for excursions, casino use, spa use, etc, or if you so choose, you can cash it out for your own personal use. SheilaNC Posted June 7, 2007 #8 Share Posted June 7, 2007 Karyn, So funny, we are saving our points for our B2B cruise with you as well. It's been tempting to use some before but we know that with 29 days of cruising, we'll need every point in February.... I thought we'd save for one of the free cruises but there are so many restrictions on choice that this seems the best deal for us.
hugger Posted June 7, 2007 Author #9 Share Posted June 7, 2007 for use as OBC? Is there a list that you can link to - so that we can see how many points we need for OBC or a discount on a cruise etc? THANKS CCer's I knew you'd have the info I was looking for :)
thomasadv Posted June 7, 2007 #10 Share Posted June 7, 2007 I'm on the June 18th Mille' sailing. I have been doing some reseach on CC's and there is a big time rip going on. One: Foriegn transaction currency fee 1% (no major complaint here) Two: Foriegn transaction fee 3-4% (on top of the currency fee) But no problem on Celebrity, right? Wrong... Three: Cross US border fee! Anything that is billed in dollars outside of US borders...3%! That means a 3% addition to your bill that is billed in dollars on board ships outside USA. This is ALL credit card companies incl AMEX EXCEPT CAPITAL ONE! Maybe Discover? (I understand the Pirates out of biz ads now! I have my Cap one card ready to go...(took a month to get). I think I'll repost this again as a credit card topic. Watch out for pickpockets! Your CC company...!
hajekfam Posted June 7, 2007 #11 Share Posted June 7, 2007 They offer a great rate for balance transfers - but you do not get points for balance transfers. Since Celebrity charges are billed from Miami - even if you cruise outside the US, there are no additional fees as Thomasadv stated in his/her point 3-cross border fees. We have used our Celebrity card for Celebrity purchases on the ship while in Europe or the Caribbean. There was no additional 3% fee as the bills came from Celebrity headquarters. thomasadv Posted June 7, 2007 #13 Share Posted June 7, 2007 Not all credit cards charge the "cross border" charge BUT many do. Good site below. Just read the small print on the latest "disclosure" in your bill. Maybe have added this in the last few months. http://europeforvisitors.com/europe/articles/credit_card_surcharges2.htm
thomasadv Posted June 7, 2007 #14 Share Posted June 7, 2007 Very interesting...and very rare. There appears to be no foriegn fees for CC Bof A cards. Nice going Celebrity! See below... https://wwwa.applyonlinenow.com/USCCapp/Ctl/validate
Rare mahdnc Posted June 7, 2007 #15 Share Posted June 7, 2007 thomasadv, We are also on the Jun 18th Millennium sailing and have our fee-less CapitalOne card ready. Although less widely accepted, we are bringing our DiscoverCard as well for the same reason. Incidentally, if you are interested, you may wish to join the very active roll call for this sailing: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=334289 Either way, maybe we will run into you later this month! Rare mahdnc Posted June 7, 2007 #16 Share Posted June 7, 2007 for use as OBC? Is there a list that you can link to - so that we can see how many points we need for OBC or a discount on a cruise etc?THANKS CCer's I knew you'd have the info I was looking for :) You can cash in your points for OBC in $50 increments (5,000 pts). There is no discount for larger amounts--in other words it is always at a rate of $1 OBC = 100 pts whether you get $50 OBC or $5000 OBC. We just cashed in 25000 pts for $250 OBC for our upcoming cruise. There is a weblink from your credit card account that takes you to the different things that you can get and the number of points required to get them. Here is a link to a partial list of what rewards you can redeem your points for: https://wwwn.applyonlinenow.com/us/rafi-faamtt/points.html

And I agree with free cruise offer...it's just too restrictive to be of any use for us. Karyn
darrencantwait Posted June 7, 2007 #18 Share Posted June 7, 2007 I've been using mine to save for that free cruise. I was hoping for the 10 night Mex Riv...but by the time I save enough...looks like those itineraries will be gone. You guys are all talking about all of the restrictions on the free cruise option for 125,000 points. Can you let me know some of the restrictions? I had no idea that it was going to be such a difficult thing to redeem. Oh...and beware, I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Capital One has joined the foreign transaction and currency conversion fee bandwagon. It may have been sent to you in one of those annoying, super-tiny type, multi-page legal updates to your policy. I'd call and check what their current policy is. SheilaNC Posted June 8, 2007 #19 Share Posted June 8, 2007 I don't have the document in front of me, but, if I remember correctly, the free cruise is limited by the cost of the cabin...something like up to $1500 per person...and to which cruises are eligible. Some people on a long ago thread said that when they tried to book, there were lots of obstacles. Karyn, do you have the specifics. I didn't save the info because that's when we decided to exchange the points for onboard credit.
darrencantwait Posted June 8, 2007 #20 Share Posted June 8, 2007 Sheila -- thanks for the feedback. I do remember a price limit...and the fact that it is only for an outside cabin. That will be the first time I'll be able to use my CC status to upgrade...and then hopefully purchase the difference to a balcony. However, it if is too restrictive...it's nice to know that I can redeem for credit toward purchase or OBC. I do remember doing a calculation at one point and the value for the cruise was much better than the OBC value. We'll see. At least I'll be getting SOMETHING, right? Cindy G Posted June 8, 2007 #21 Share Posted June 8, 2007 No more double points for travel and restaurants? When did that happen? Were we told? I guess I haven't checked my balance lately. Argh!!!
hugger Posted June 8, 2007 Author #22 Share Posted June 8, 2007 with the credit card info. Looks like we may still be better off with our regular credit card deal with Citi bank where we get cash back. THANKS - I appreciate all of the input and time you guys put into educating me. You're the BEST!!!
Karynanne Posted June 8, 2007 #23 Share Posted June 8, 2007 With the Celebrity Rewards Card, if you redeem it for cash, i.e., 5000 pts., you only get $25.00. If you redeem the same 5000 pts. for onboard credit, then it equals $50.00. If you know you're going to be cruising quite a bit, just redeem your points for onboard credit...go to the casino, and get the cash, by using your SeaPass card. Spender Nui Posted June 8, 2007 #24 Share Posted June 8, 2007 I use a Marriott VISA and have recently cashed in points to book 2 free HAL cruises. This gets us an outside cabin which we've been able to upgrade.
