Marie50 Posted June 20, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 20, 2007 I am not sure of the ports at each island, but how do we go about researching car rentals at any of the island? Thanks
mauimary Posted June 20, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2007 I am not sure of the ports at each island, but how do we go about researching car rentals at any of the island? Thanks All the major car rental companies are on the Islands (Avis,Hertz,National, Dollar) You can call them up or look at their internet sites. We have prebooked a car that is cancellable just in case our itinerary changes. Be sure to ask about returning a car the same day though. You run the risk at Priceline that your itenerary may change and they are not cancellable. Also be warry of priceline if you bring the car back early(within the 24 hours) We were charged $98 per day(yes you heard that right) and it was a mess to get it credited back!! Apparently Avis voided our contract with Priceline and charged us huge!! We returned a car later in the evening the same day. We had nowhere to park it. Just watch out!! :)
bug_dan Posted June 21, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 21, 2007 Just a suggestion but you might try Priceline. As mauimary pointed out, there can be problems if you book through them, but they will at least give you some idea of what the prices are for each Island. You can also get the same info with Orbitz etc. We've always booked directly with the rental agencies..the consensus on this board seems to be Thrifty available at http://www.thrifty.com. We've used Dollar, Alamo and National, never had any problem with any of them.
Ine Posted June 21, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 21, 2007 Avis has no shuttles in Hilo and Kona.
bug_dan Posted June 21, 2007 #5 Share Posted June 21, 2007 Meant to post this link to give you an idea of different rates. http://www.bnm.com/hon.htm For Kona, most recommendations are for Thrifty or Dollar as they have an office in the King Kamehameha Hotel, just a short walk from the pier. Also bear in mind that Lahaina and Kona are "tender" ports. If you book for Lahaina, be sure to use the JHM code for the airport, DO NOT use OGG as that's for Kahului on the other side of the Island. For the King Kamehameha Hotel location use KOAN02(that's a zero before the 2)
