Host Walt Posted August 15, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2004 Many people have asked about locks on luggage. The TSA has a list of locks that can be used on checked luggage that will not be cut open if an inspection is needed. Click on TSA Approved Locks for details. CruisinDoug Posted August 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 16, 2004 Just be aware that not all TSA screeners have these tools, or may choose not to use them due to a large quantity of bags to deal with.
sweet sheep Posted August 16, 2004 #3 Share Posted August 16, 2004 Target stores carries one of the locks and has the best price-at least $2 less than other places.
FLJudi Posted August 16, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 16, 2004 We use sturdy cable ties. If TSA needs to get in they can cut them open, but then they replace them with their own. Haven't had a problem in three years of travel including 3 trips overseas. FLJudi
gkm Posted August 16, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 16, 2004 We bought them when for our Feb. 2004 cruise from Magellean. Magellean guarantees them, that if they're broken, they will replace them. Unfortunately, in the Atlanta airport they removed one (whether they unlocked it or broke it we don't know) and did not put it back on the suitcase. We now use cable ties. merlin123 Posted August 18, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 18, 2004 Whenever I travel to the United States I use cable ties. Travelling from Australia the last thing I want to do is start looking for somewhere to repair my suitcase if damaged by the TSA or looking for replacement locks. Even in Australia now I use the cable ties - very convenient. Cheers Merlin123
reklawr Posted August 20, 2004 #7 Share Posted August 20, 2004 What do you carry with you to cut the cable ties once you arrive at your destination? Roy
FLJudi Posted August 20, 2004 #8 Share Posted August 20, 2004 I pack my nail scissors, clippers etc.(things that would not pass TSA security) in a small pouch in the small outside pocket of my checked suitcase. They have never disappeared. FLJudi
new_cruiser Posted August 20, 2004 #9 Share Posted August 20, 2004 Nail clippers that don't have a file are allowed in carry-on. You can either buy ones without the file or you can cut the file off of the regular ones.
merlin123 Posted August 23, 2004 #10 Share Posted August 23, 2004 I do the same as FLJudi and pack nail clippers in an unlocked outside pocket of my suitcase. I use the big toe clippers rather than the dainty fingernail size ones. In Australia you can't carry any type of nail clipper (with or without file) on board. moai Posted August 30, 2004 #11 Share Posted August 30, 2004 If I’m not mistaken those TSA approved locks cost around $ 20 each. We used cable ties and carry a nail clipper on our carry-on. Just remember to bring extra cable ties for the return trip. :D
Pacificlander Posted August 30, 2004 #12 Share Posted August 30, 2004 Just bought some of the TSA locks yesterday at Target. $5.99 for a set of two. Very reasonable.
Rare Traveling Fools Posted September 3, 2004 #13 Share Posted September 3, 2004 We have been using colored cable ties for years. In the old days we used them in addition to locks. (too many master keys) If TSA cuts the cable they replace it with one of their own and slip a notice into your suitcase informing you your bag has been inspected. If you use colored cable ties you can tell immediately if someone other than TSA has been in your luggage. We don't secure the cable ties until we check the bags. I don't worry about having anything to cut them at the destination...hotel, family, ship, etc have cutting implements. Just returned from 3 weeks in Europe and had 4 international flights...nary a problem.
