We are planning a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest and wondering in anyone has ever booked the Catagory D or E rooms...they are on the bottom of the ship. We have concerns about motion sickness, engine noise, etc. Thanks for any help you can give us.

Parrot-eyes: Welcome to Cruise Critic! We have done one river cruise, on Viking, but are planning another one on Avalon for next year.

There is very little wave action on the river cruises. I doubt that you will have to worry about sea sickness. Much of the time enroute, we could hardly notice that we were moving if we were not looking outside.

We had a forward cabin on the mid-deck and did not feel any vibration or hear any engine noise-it was remarkeably smooth and quiet.

If you have not already found it, you will find a lot of good information about river crusing, but more-so within the "Special Interest" forum, on the "River Cruise" sub-forum.

Again, Welcome!

Look at the deck plans very carefully. We took one Viking cruise in 2004. It was the Rhine River cruise. We booked what we thought would be a good cabin. It was category B, cabin 233 on the Viking Sky. When we booked it, we got the last cabin they had. It turned out to be above the engine room. That cabin was very warm - hot - the whole cruise. There was no air-conditioning since it was in October and the windows didn't open. We ended up leaving the door open almost all of the time. It was at the back of the boat. There was no noise and no motion, but the cabin was just about unbearable.

Hi parrot-eyes,

yes we did have a category D cabin on Viking Europe, location was good - in the middle of the ship, but it is a very functional but very small cabin. The window will not open because it is just a little above the water line, you can also hear the water hitting the side of the cabin - you might like it (to help you sleep) or hate it. The bed is a sofa that opens up into a bed. There is not much room in the cabin but it was OK for the two of us.

At that time when we booked that river cruise that was all that they had left - but the price was right and the river 'cruise' was great.

We paid for an "upgrade" last year on a Uniworld Rhine River cruise from the first deck to the second deck. I wasn't worth the extra $$. There is no motion to speak of, so don't worry about that. Mid-ship is best.
