AUS Car Rental Requirements for U.S. Citizens

I understand that you can drive in Australia with a valid US driver's license, but are there any other specific requirements if you want to rent a car? And is it true that you need to keep your passport with you while driving?

A bit off topic, but on our recent trip to the States, my International License was shunned in favour of my Australian state license.

When booking a car here in Oz try driveway.com.au for rates. We are using them when we will be in Ireland in September and their rates were a lot cheaper than dealing directly with the main hirers even though you end up hiring a car through Hertz, Budget, Avis etc.
