Tigerman4LSU Posted July 27, 2007 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2007 We are renting a car when we are in Skagway. We are wanting to go to Emerald Lake. How do I get there? Also, where do you recommend we go to eat along the way there or back? George

If you follow Murray's Guide (referenced in the previous response) you will have no problems getting to Emerald Lake and back. It is a wonderful drive with lots of opportunities to pull over and enjoy the scenery. If you can find lunch items in town before you leave it would be best however, there is a place to eat at Caribou Crossing. Enjoy the drive - it is awesome! Then turn out on the Dyea spur to the overlook for a spectacular view. After returning to the main road, just keep going!! It is about an hour and a half drive, straight through. However, you will want to stop frequently along the way to take pictures. Just this side of Emerald Lake is the Spirit Lake Inn, a good place to stop for sandwiches and some great blueberry pie. Or you can eat at Caribou Crossing (plan to get there after 1 PM, so all the tour buses will be gone.) Don't miss the wildlife museum at Caribou Crossing, and the dog musher's camp! You can see our pics from two trips at http://www.elite.net/~thehalls/alaska.html and http://www.elite.net/~thehalls/alaskaZ.html Have a GREAT cruise! patnlcc Posted July 28, 2007 #6 Share Posted July 28, 2007 We are just back from a cruise to Alaska and did just what you are intending to do. The Avis office is tiny and you must pre-book your car. When we arrived people from the cruiseships were trying to rent a car and they had none available - they are booked out every day. The road to Emerald Lake is the only road you can take so you can't get lost. You will need to take snacks with you. There are no eating places between Skagway and Carcross, but there is a 'general store' and a very good visitor centre in Carcross. Also the dog sledding place just north of Carcross has food. Emerald Lake alone is worth the trip. It is gorgeous. The distance is only around 70 miles from Skagway but you will find it takes quite a while as you will stop often at scenic spots to take photos. A lovely trip. Enjoy!
