dugan127 Posted August 21, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2004 Everyone lists rain gear as a must for Alaska, but what type is needed? Is a windbreaker OK or do you need a full suit with a jacket and pants? I did not know if it is just misty or does it down pour?
RockyTopMom Posted August 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2004 It is more than a mist. I can only tell you what worked great for me. I have friends who are motorcyclists, and shopping with them one day, I found a pair of very light weight rain pants, (at a TOTES shop) that pull on, over your jeans, or whatever, and you can roll them up into about the size of a large hair brush. I carried them in my backpack for shore excursions when the weather looked threatening. A good pair of water proof hiking shoes/boots, and an inexpensive rain poncho (Wal Mart type) over a valour pullover and you're good to go! Kind of like what I would wear in late March where I grew up...in Batavia, NY.:)
Budget Queen Posted August 21, 2004 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2004 I like the heavier long ponchos, cheap and compact. Key is Quick drying for everything else- why no jeans for me and 2 pair of walking shoes.
Krazy Kruizers Posted August 21, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 21, 2004 We have always taken water proof, lined rain jackets - works for us. That way we can layer off under the jacket and adjust to the weather. If the weather looks threatening, then we pack small umbrellas in a pack back.
stephenandrew Posted August 21, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 21, 2004 I have a Gortex Rainsuit that worked well for me---shields me from the rain and also helps keep you warm---which we needed in Glacier Bay.
