No Trays-why Why Why?

My reply regarding the heaping plates of food was in response to another poster that talked about waste.

I mentioned the full figure only to describe the situation. What was so obvious and really bordering on obscene was the amount of food they decided they had to pile on the plate. And, in light of the discussion about trays, I wonder how much MORE they would have piled on.

As to why I even observed it > it was hard not to miss. It looked like they were trying to set up their own buffet. It was sick.

For those worried about having to stand in line for a long time without a tray, all of NCL's newer ships (i.e., Jewel, Pearl, Jade, Gem) have "stations" in the buffet, not "lines." There is almost never a need to "wait" for more than a few seconds for whatever it is you want to get, unless it is made-to-order, like an omelet or custom sandwich.

Perhaps it might be better to pay attention to your own plate and not worry about what anyone else is eating?

You took the words right out of my mouth.

It is no one's business how much those 'full figured' ladies, (or anyone else for that matter) pile onto their plates as long as it is EATEN AND NOT WASTED.

I am also not a 'full figured' person, but I think it's awfully rude to comment about another person's weight like that. God forbid you ever find yourself with an addiction, and yes, food is an addiction for many obese people. Life can be very difficult for them when people like you stick their nose where it doesn't belong.

I noticed the missing trays on the Sun back in October of 2005. I missed having them. The group I was with laughed all week telling jokes about their non-presence. We figured the trays had gone to the Spirit or to the Jewel, two of NCL's recent acquisitions at the time. We stole a bar tray and used it to make a statement.

I since sailed the Spirit in April 2006. No trays. We decided to use the tray beneath the ice bucket to make a statement.

I next sailed the Jewel in November 2006. No trays. A lovely silver tray was in the penthouse hutch. I used it to make a statement.

I do not know exactly what I was stating, but the trays sure came in handy because the only seats I could find at the breakfast buffet were the ones furthest away from the buffet!

Will I still be thinking about the missing trays on my deathbed? You bet your bippie I will! What do you suppose NCL did with all of them??????

Your last remark, about thinking about the missing trays on your deathbed? Well my dear you made me laugh out loud...thank you so much for sending me off to beddy bye with a good giggle. I think if more people would do that, there would be alot less turmoil EVERYWHERE!

I will be thinking of you, dear Coka, when I make my very first foray into the action station area of the beautiful Pearl next month! Perhaps I shall defer my trip there until we are transitting the Panaman Canal? Two "first time ever" experiences all wrapped up into one! ;) !!

WAWW,

Please please have the most excellent time on the Panama Canal cruise. You are living out one of my dreams by going through the canal. I look forward to your review green with envy! If you can read David McCullough's Path Between The Seas prior to your trip, it will be all the more meaningful. The canal's entire history is fascinating!

All this arguing about jeans and trays absolutely amazes me. Don't you people have anything better to do than complain about a vacation?

I get on these boards to learn about the cruiselines, the destinations, the travel tips...it makes no sense to argue about petty things.

It is a vacation for goodness sake...get over it!

And FWIW...I could care less about jeans or no jeans, wear what you want, and with or without trays, I am sure everyone will enjoy their vacation and food experiences and get what they want. Life is too short to worry about a tray.

Carnival still had trays in May on the Conquest. I miss the trays on NCL - when I was sick my hubby had to bring food to me in the cabin one peice at a time - soup and then back for food - pathetic... Sorry but the trays are VERY nice to have.. Debbie

Carries no more germs than plates.Wash the suckers.I can jsut see some older people trying to balance hot food and drinks.Just mad enough to cancel my first ever cruise with them.

You are going to cancel your cruise over a tray? Your choice, but don't rebook on RCI, RCI don't have trays either.

Trays are handy for taking food back to your cabin. But why do so? Just call Room Service. It is free.

He should have explained the situation and ASKED for a tray. They would have gladly accommodated him and probably carried it for him. Just ask for help if you need it. Not asking is pathetic!

Because if you take the food back to your cabin, you get to pick out what you want. :) If someone else bring the food to your cabin, you don't get to pick it out. :(

Well, that is why I do it that way. Also, I don't like having to pick out what I want for breakfast the night before. What happens if while I'm sleeping I change my mind (or worse, someone might sneak in and change my mind and I might not even realize my mind got changed  ).

Get room service, keep the tray they bring with your order,go to buffet with said tray for the remainder of cruise, bring back all your heart desires.

She will not fit on the tray and her husband was none too happy with me for trying to do exactly this in the first place.

Even though the trays were small and struck me as belonging in a instututional cafateria I miss them. Was nice to load up a hot breakfast for the two of us to take back to the cabin and eat on the balcony. This option is not available thru room service.

On Princess there were no trays as well. However the plates were almost of a platter size and much more functional. Was nice with the trays not to be carrying cutlery in ones pocket.

Thank you for posting about choice - that was a big part of it.

BUT believe it or not I was sick with high fever and flu real bad and did not want to get around people at all. The travelers checks (all the cash at the end of the cruise we had left) were in my name and not hubby's so I had to go to the pursers desk to cash them for room service tips and since I was not going to get out of my cabin we did not have cash to tip room service. And I am NOT going to call room service and not tip them. Now that I can think about it (my head was so full of medicine at the time) I could have had hubby get cash at the casino using the card and he could have asked someone for a tray but he didn't and I was not in a position to be mad at him - he was being so sweet taking care of me... :) I looked so bad when we disembarked that the customs guy didn't believe my passport photo was me! Debbie

Straight from the "horses Mouth" (top management at the cruise line). They have designed "action stations" instead of a straight buffet line, so that you don't have to get your whole meal at once. Take your soup and salad, or appetizer, go back for entree at your leisure, and then get dessert. This way the hot food is hot and the cold food it cold, etc. Go back as many times as you want, there really aren't lines. Or so they say. Actually it works pretty good on the ships I've sailed lately. They want it to be a self serve restaurant, not a cafeteria. Does this explanation make sense? (But doesn't help if you want to take a tray to your room)

Makes a lot of sense. Much better than standing in line like in a high school cafeteria. The only "stations" where I've had to wait were for popular items requiring some amount of labor to put it on your dish--like the carving station or Caesar salad--and this was for less than a minute.

The "stations" approach works especially well for someone who wants something small to eat early in the evening--perhaps before a show--to tide over until a later dinner. No need to go through the entire line to grab some soup (chilled fruit, preferably) or a salad or a slice of leg of lamb.

I sometimes take food back to the cabin... usually it was sushi to share with DW as we rested after port and before dinner. Maybe it was something off the international buffet by the pool.

Whatever we brought back, I can't recall ever bringing back more that I could carry on a plate. To require a tray, you would have a lot of food. We're talking a whole meal, not a snack.

While snacks in the cabin while resting are great, I much prefer meals at a table with all the conveniences. Eating in the cabin means awkwardness. Unless you have a suite, it is difficult to eat a full meal in a cabin. They just are not equipped to handle it.
