Informal night question for recent (w/in the last 3 mos) Century cruisers

I don't want to start a dresscode debate and I'm not interested in links to the Celebrity dresscode. Just a quick question for recent Century cruisers only please - on informal nights, did you see any men wearing dress pants, dress shirts and ties without sport coats (and %, if you wouldn't mind taking a guess)? Thanks!

By 'dress' I guess you mean not a polo or T-shirt and pants not jeans.

In the Casual Dining area casual rules applied at all times, ie you could wear a polo and shorts. It follows that casual dress was also possible in transit but cruisers were asked to abide by the rig of the day.

One night I did not wear a jacket on the informal night - too hot - but then I did not dine in the main dining room. In the lounges I guess some 95% of people wore some sort of jacket. In the theatre more were in shirt sleeves, about 25-30%.

A jacket came in handy when walking the deck after dinner. It kept Mrs PN warm. This also seems to be the rig on formal nights with DWs wearing Tuxedo to ward off an early (or late) evening chill. :)

Just be comfortable.

Ok

formal nights

dark suit, or jacket and tie, or tux ? yes?:)

Casual nights, jacket and dress shirt, no tie

or Jacket and tie:)

Do I understand NO polo shirt with jacket?

Also--should the men in my life (DH and 2 teens)

pack only polo shirts -- no T shirts (can they wear a T shirt around the pool etc?

or is this regarding restaurants?

Thanks--;)

Correct

Casual nights, jacket and dress shirt, no tie

or Jacket and tie:)

Casual is any shirt, no need for jacket/tie/non-jeans.

Informal

Is jacket, no tie, no jeans, not sure about the no polo but I think that is probably the case.

Do I understand NO polo shirt with jacket?

I suspect that this might depend on the polo. If it was more like a knitted shirt rather than a multi-coloured (and expensive) one then it wold probably be OK.

Also--should the men in my life (DH and 2 teens)

pack only polo shirts -- no T shirts (can they wear a T shirt around the pool etc?

Definitely Ts around the pool are not a problem and no problem in the Casual Dining Restaurant or on any Casual night. Around the pool, and in the pool, a T is a great sun cover up.

Really as long as they have at least one non-T shirt, not so much to avoid annoying other cruisers but so they are not themselves embarassed. looking at some cruisers ideas of acceptable dress however I would say that some are definitely no embarassed.

Would YOU sun bathe in a large white bra? :(

PS, no trainers or sports shoes as I recall. I will check my cruise notes later.

I always dress with slacks, shirt, jacket and tie. I even wear shoes.

Shoes?

:p I have wondered when flip flops became acceptable as a dress shoe--but then saw a sports team visiting the White House--and were sooo underdressed and in flip flops!!

Evening Dress Codes

Celebrity's evening dress codes include three types: formal, casual and informal. The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the appropriate evening attire.

Formal Night Attire

Ladies: Evening gown or fancy dress

Gentlemen: Tuxedo, dinner jacket or dark suit

Informal Night Attire

Ladies: Informal dress or pants and blouse

Gentlemen: Jacket and tie with slacks

Casual Night Attire

Ladies: Pantsuit or sporty outfit

Gentlemen: Sport shirt and slacks

Dining in jeans detracts from the overall ambience and is therefore not allowed in the main dining room after 6:00pm.

Evening dress codes apply to both main restaurant dining as well as specialty restaurant dining*.

Constellation did not mention a tie.

The specific mention of a sports shirt shows that informal means a regular shirt.

Century--In April , most stuck to the required dress for informal night but some did skip the tie--

Maybe some men didn't wear ties on informal night because ties are no longer required. :D The web site and the cruise documents say the Cruise Daily is the guide to proper evening attire. The Cruise Daily no longer requires a tie on informal nights.

When you dress with a jacket you wear a tie.

"The Cruise Daily no longer requires a tie on informal nights."

Just because the daily doesn't mention it doesn't mean its not anticipated. It doesn't say no TIE required, or tie optional. ( however it creates red tape which people use as an excuse).

As I look through the dailies of previous cruises they don't mention socks, shoes or underware either...nor do they say you have to cut the hair out of your nose and ears, trim your nails or take a shower.

This one actually says JACKET AND SLACKS...I guess we over dressed by wearing a shirt:confused:

Its simply a wording issue that with any common sense most would know that a tie is being requested.

Dave, how very formal. I must agree about not wearing a tie with a jacket. My tailor cuts my jacket to lie properly on a shirt and tie.

Increasingly however jacket/no tie is becoming the norm in the same way no hats is now the norm. Our late Prime Minster used to drop the tie to adopt a more informal look and our leader of the opposition too; how common. Our ex-PM even wore jeans when visiting with President Bush; terrible choice.

Our present Prime Minister even started in Government wearing a lounge suit instead of white tie and tails. I believe 10 years later he now conforms to the norms.

Dave,

I'm sure I'll regret jumping in here but, with all due respect, I disagree with your assertion that "[w]hen you dress with a jacket you wear a tie." You've expressed previously that you were brought up to believe that a tie must be worn with a jacket. I respect your belief but it is a far from universally held. In fact, today, the requirement of a tie with a jacket is most likely a minority view. I think your analysis of the dress code is a sincere attempt to make the dress code agree with your personal beliefs on proper dress.

First of all, the daily program requirement for formal nights is a "Tuxedo, dinner jacket, or dark suit and tie." The requirement for informal nights is: "Jacket, slacks. No jeans." If a tie is anticipated with a jacket on informal nights as you assert, Why would Celebrity specifically require a tie on formal nights? After all, if a tie was anticipated with a sport coat, why wouldn't it be similarly anticipated with a suit? Just out of curiosity, if a man wanted to wear a jacket on a casual night, would he also have to wear a tie? In addition, if you look at daily programs for cruises prior to 2005, you'll see that the formal night requirement was the same as today, i.e., a dark suit and tie. However, prior to 2005, the daily program specifically required a jacket, tie and slacks. The removal of the tie requirement from the informal night dress code while leaving the tie requirement intact in the formal night dress code after 2004, stronly suggests to me that Celebrity loosened the informal night dress code by no longer requiring a tie. When Celebrity wants to ensure that gentlemen wear a tie, they specifically require it. It is not simply a matter of common sense that a tie is requested or required on informal nights based upon the daily program dress code.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this issue. I think we both have the same goal of having men comply with the dress code.

Best regards.

I have to agree with DaveFR. Not only do the cruise daily's word it that way, but I'm reading the exact same wording on our Celebrity Cruises 2007-2008 destination brochure for our Panama cruise we are taking in a month. It states tie required for formal nights but just mentions jacket and slacks on informal. The mention of a tie on formal with the omission of it on informal tells me that a tie is optional for men on informal nights. I have lived in several states so far, (Florida, Virginia and California), traveled quite a bit and have seen plenty of men wear jackets without ties and look great, not to mention some designer men's collections certainly have photographed their sport jackets with men wearing shirts without ties. It won't bother me on our cruise next month if most of the men decide to wear their jackets without a tie on informal nights.

I guess its the wording. I grew up with "informal". we had the Prom and we had the Informal, just to make a comparison. What I know as informal, others know as Semi-formal...so thats where I make the comparisson.

Of course now-a-days if you go to a semi-formal function at a school there would most likely be jeans, baggy pants, t-shirts etc.....( skimpy dresses ). Not like 20 or 30 years ago, so yes the times have changed.

Wearing a jacket sans tie to me is country club casual IMHO, and not Informal at all. However, ask anyone and the consensus is "It looks NICE". However nice and clean a person looks doesn't mean what they are wearing is appropriate...beauty is in the eye of the beholder and most are wearing rose colored glasses.

Actually, on one of my dailies from a Zenith cruise last year, it does say Jacket and tie during one informal night...the other says jacket and slacks.

I think it is less of a decision to omit the tie by the person printing the daily, than the person actually making the policy.

Personally, Its not going to affect my vacation one way or the other if someone doesn't wear a tie, and they are dressed in jacket, collared shirt, and slacks....I do think a polo with a jacket is not informal and trying to disquise it as so is tacky.

I wear what I an used to and what X has posted in its official policy. The whole " daily will be a guide " thing is not specifically what to wear, but which dress code to follow ( casual, informal, or formal) as your daily guide.

I agree to disagree but I think you're splitting hairs to get around symantics and make your point.

BTW: In making your point you actually proved mine. No where does it say shirt, shoes, socks, underwear in describing the formal evenings...So based on your logic, I can walk down to the diningroom barefoot and naked with the exception of my dinner jacket. and be with in the dress code:D

Great !!!

It doesn't mention shoes so I'll be happy to be barefoot during dinner...Maybe we can play footsie because it doesn't mention shoes for women either:D .

Dave:eek:

LOL! That's always an option even if shoes are required, after all it doesn't say we can't kick them off under the table.
