LeftatGator Posted September 26, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 26, 2007 Just back from the Conquest (our second time) and my wife and I could not get over how smoky the ship was. We are both sensitive to smoke (perhaps too sensitive, I will admit), but the ubiquitous smoke was overwhelming. 1. Our cabin smelled like a bar. Whenever we walked in we were hit with the stench of old smoke. 2. Our balcony was always awash in smoke. The three cabins forward of ours, the one below, above and aft of ours, all had people smoking. Smoke hung on our balcony constantly. We could not enjoy our balcony without smelling someone's smoke. 3. Our deck (Lido) always smelled (very strongly) of smoke. All the smoke from the Lobby (as well, I believe, as some from the casino) rose upward to the Lido deck where it just hung. 4. To go to dinner in the Renoit Dining Room, we had to go through the Lobby, which was filled with people smoking. 5. To go outside on the lobby deck, we had to go through the Lobby. 6. Three times we got into the elevator where someone was smoking. 7. To view photos on deck 4, you were pummeled with smoke coming up from the Lobby. 8. To go shopping on deck 5, there was smoke from the Lobby, from people smoking in the chairs on deck 5, and from the Casino. 9. The promenade obviously smelled like smoke because it's open to the casino. I understand bars smelling like smoke. And I understand the casino smelling like smoke. But the smell everywhere on the ship was bothersome. On Thursday of the cruise my allergies were going nuts, and when I got home I had to go to the doctor. I had a really bad sinus infection, which I believe was affected by the constant stench of smoke. I don't care if people smoke, but why do I have to smell it on my vacation, in my room, on my balcony that I paid for??? I didn't pay for the added blessing of someone else's smoke. It's not my fault they can't break the addiction and control themselves. So that I'm not just a complainer, here are some suggestion (that I'm sure Carnival will never employ). Please note, I am not suggesting a ban on smoking. 1. Designate smoking areas that are either outside, or can be closed off (with a door- like in the bars). 2. Install a serious air filtration system in the casino (like most casinos use - where you can't even detect the smell of smoke). Install these in all the bars. 3. Prohibit smoking in the main lobby. It's the main public space and shouldn't be polluted and shouldn't cause all higher decks to smell the smoke. 4. Make one side of the ship smoking and one side non-smoking. OR, make the aft of the ship smoking, and the forward sections non-smoking. 5. Put smoke detectors in the elevators. Just my thoughts. Our cruise wasn't ruined, but it was tainted a bit. We are now planning our next cruise, and I can say, I don't think it will be on Carnival as long as smoke is everywhere.

But, I must be missing something - I have never noticed anyone smoking in the lobby - ever - on any cruise. As for the elevators - it is against the rules, don't get on (report it if you wish), perhaps take the stairs if you can. Smoking on the balconies is just the luck of the draw I guess. You must have gotten really unlucky to be so surrounded by smokers. Payd:)

I have zero problem with smoking areas and even not smoking in cabins. I feel bad that you had a balcony that you couldn't use....and in that instance I would be an offender. I AM going to smoke on my balcony. I think anywhere they allow smoking should have a decent ventilation system and I am sorry that your experience was so bad. As for your cabin it is my understanding that you can have the room steward clean the carpets and bedding if your room smells. As for the highlighted part....I don't want to control myself and I don't want to stop smoking. It is legal, puts bread on my table and I enjoy it. But I will out of respect for others try to compromise whenever possible with those around me. Even outside I ask others if smoke bothers them before lighting up, and since we all have our pet peeves my smoking peeve is that people throw butts out car windows or all over the place. Have fun on your next cruise...I do believe there are cruise lines that restrict smoking more than others.

GoinCruisin Posted September 26, 2007 #7 Share Posted September 26, 2007 I've never seen smoking in the lobby either (wait, I take that back, they used to allow it, but not in several years it seems) Did you mention to your steward the smell in your cabin? Most people are able to get them to use their magic stuff and it really makes a difference... I think this is going to be a big problem for RCCL when they go to no smoking in the staterooms... more and more smokers will be booking balconies... I'm sorry you had a tough time :(

THERE IS GOING TO BE SMOKE IN THE CIGAR BAR!" I mean it was cigar bar with cigars for sale and the only thing in the menu was, guess what, you guessed it, CIGARS. Of course, one of the women in the party sat there and argued with the bartender for an hour because someone spilled her drink at one of the dance clubs and she expected the bartender to refill her drink for FREE. So those women were delusional to begin with. If I'm at a bar and someone is blowing towards me, I will either move or politely ask them to blow it the other way. A respectful and nice request has RARELY been rejected. I also "suck it up" if I'm in a place where smoking is the "norm" - like the casino. So thanks to all the respectful smokers out there. I will respect your rights and you respect mine! Just as I know many smokers that have bad health (not always caused by smoking), I know PLENTY of non smokers that are not healthy... I know non smokers that died before the age of 20, and I've known smokers that lived well into their 90's. I know you were trying to make a point, but not all non smokers are healthy... The reason you can't smell it is because you smoke.. I think that in the future every public place will be smoke free.. Whether it is a popular decision or not.. I also think that it is a personal decision..(as long as the air I am breathing is smoke free) Everyone should be able to make their own decisions, so a smoking section, rooms included should be an option for the smokers and a non smoking section, rooms included for them. I am sure non smokers and smokers alike wouldn't have a problem with that.:)

cathyz Posted September 26, 2007 #20 Share Posted September 26, 2007 One good thing about living in California, there is virtually no smoking in any public place and in some towns not even on the street now or in multi-unit apartment buildings. LAX2??? Posted September 26, 2007 #23 Share Posted September 26, 2007 I wish they would make certain areas smoking rooms, otheres non smoking. On the conquest, no matter what time I went out on my balcony to smoke, someone would start lously coughing and trying to make a point (yes, I know.) That isnt comfortable for any of us. I do feel bad about it. I paid for a balcony so I could smoke, they paid so they could enjoy it without the death cloud nailing them in the face. I think there should be nonsmoking rooms and clubson one half, and then smoking rooms and clubs on the other. Make it easier on all of us. :) Oh, and Carnival - stop making people walk through the smoky casino! Not fair to the non-smokers (and on that note please dont make the casino all non-smoking!) :D
Mikel1733 Posted September 26, 2007 #24 Share Posted September 26, 2007 Like it or not everyone including crew and passengers are smoking on the ship. Some smokers are actively smoking and the balance are passively smoking. There is no way to bypass this smoke if you move around the ship. In your room the steward may be able to elimate the visible odor yet the contaminants still filter thru the air in the room. Obviously the level of 2nd hand smoke get greater when you use the casino and the clubs that allow smoking. Its a no win situation for folks who have asthma and allergies.
