You should be able to call a ship in port and at sea. If it is urgent, you may wish to try calling.

Telephones in guests' cabins have voice mail.

This is why I always give this CC board as an emergency contact to my family when I am cruising. I know that I can probably be reached through CC quicker than "normal" channels.

I actually had exceptional help from HAL when trying to reach my parents on the Ryndam in August. I posted about it a while ago, but will repeat here.

 

I'd received a strange phone message from my Mom, and was concerned something had happened. I needed to reach them to make sure all was okay, but by their itinerary the Ryndam was at sea.

 

One of the regular HAL posters gave me a phone number to call but warned I'd need a credit card and the charge would be something very high (can't remember, but $16 sticks in my head...just to connect the call).

 

Instead, I phoned HAL Customer Service in Seattle and first asked if I could directly e-mail the Purser or some other ship employee to ask that they get a message to my parents. The representative said they don't allow others direct contact with ship personnel, but she said she would be happy to get a message to the ship for me.

 

I dictated a brief message. She looked up my parents' information (once I provided her with their names, sail date and ship information) and assured me she would contact the ship to pass it on. It did not cost me anything.

 

Less than 20 minutes after hanging up the phone, I received an e-mail from my father. He had received the message from their steward, who tracked him down in a lounge.
