JennAngel9 Posted November 15, 2007 #1 Share Posted November 15, 2007 My husband and I are planning on taking our mothers on the Noordam next July and were wondering if anyone on these boards could comment on the demographics of the ship while it is doing mediterranean voyages. My husband and I generally keep to ourselves, but our mothers (one late 50s and one mid 60s) would like other people to socialize with.
jtl513 Posted November 15, 2007 #2 Share Posted November 15, 2007 In June '06 I would say that the majority of the people were in their 50s and 60s. In our 'escorted' group of 25 there were two teen-aged boys and one girl just out of college (with parents in both cases). There was also a couple of teachers in their late 30s or early 40s. We ahd a table next to a couple on their honeymoon. I think the summer Mediterranean cruises might get a younger crowd than, say, a winter 7-day cruise out of Tampa because the older crowd can't take the 10 hour plane rides over and back, and the students and teachers can't cruise as easily in the winter. RuthC Posted November 16, 2007 #3 Share Posted November 16, 2007 Is the Noordam doing the Mediterranian next year? I thought it was going to Alaska, and the Zuiderdam and Oosterdam were headed to Europe. Or am I losing it. Again.

This past year the Westerdam was doing the same itinerary. The demographics are mixed during the summer, but 50's and 60's is about average. Which dates/itinerary are you looking at (they are both great), or are you thinking of the 20 day btb East and West? We did the Western Med this year and doing the Eastern next year. I love Rome so it gives me an excuse to go back. You should join the Role Call for your date. I arranged private tours for those I met on the roll call at 5 ports and our groups ranged from ages 12-75.

JennAngel9 Posted November 16, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted November 16, 2007 Thanks everyone! We are doing the Western Mediterranean. It is the first time my mom has visited Europe so I thought that she would be able to see a more varied set of places on the Western Med cruise. I am curious about the demographics because I read that Noordam was built to attract more "younger" people to HAL (children/young families?) but one of my favorite things about sailing on Veendam was the lack of ill behaved children. Does anyone know how successful HAL has been in getting more younger customers? Would a 10-day holiday cruise on Noordam still have fewer children than the equivalent cruise on RCI or NCL or Carnival?
catl331 Posted November 16, 2007 #9 Share Posted November 16, 2007 I would say there would be more on the Carnival and Royal C. ships than HAL. I think most younguns would be with family groups, i.e. parents and grandparents. On HAL when families and young adults are present I have found they are not partiers and behave.:)
Sea Island Lady Posted November 16, 2007 #10 Share Posted November 16, 2007 We will be on her June 8th, 2008.
