question on tipping for private tours and transfers in BA & Santiago

In Buenos Aires, we have scheduled transfers from the airport to the hotel, transfers from hotel to pier, and a tango club show with private transfers.

We have also scheduled a full day tour and transfer from the pier in Valparaiso to the Santiago airport. There are two of us. How much should we tip the driver in each case?

Hi,

May I ask you who you booked your transfers through? We will be doing this cruise in February 2009. I have emailed 2 companies and have not heard from either one. Any information will be helpful.

Thanks,

Vickie

Tipping is really a very personal thing. I would base my tip based on the length of the tour/transfer, the overall cost and the quality of the tour/transfer. You will find that each person will tip differently so my recommendation is to do what you think makes sense. Any size tip will be appreciated.

Cookiersmom and John & Shirley - We are all on the same cruise. We have booked with Carlos for the whole time we are in Buenos Aires, which is 3 nights. His rates seem reasonable enough and he has been highly recommended on these boards. We are going to the tango show/dinner at Esquina Carlos Gardel. John and Shirley, is this the same one you are going to?

No, we are going to Taconeandro -- we will have to compare notes. Carlos said that it was smokefree. I have read that the Gardel show is excellent though and that was on our short list.

Oh, you are both using Carlos, so he must be a company, not a single person?

We are doing an Estancia at Montevideo, so are really looking for a general BA tour on the 24th and maybe 25th. We arrive on the 24th in the morning.

Are your tours private drivers?

Anyway, I will write to him and see what he can offer us.

We also want to go to a Tango show one nite, I guess I will have to check out the two you mention. DH will definately prefer smoke free, for sure.

thanks
