A strengthening tropical cyclone is expected to hit Fiji's capital, Suva, tonight and forecasters have warned of widespread flooding and damage.

People in low lying areas have been urged to consider evacuating, as category one Cyclone Daman approaches with wind speeds of 100-155kph.

The cyclone is expected to make landfall in Fiji's northeast about 9pm tonight (10pm NZ time) and hit Suva by midnight. Read more.....

I see flights are also canceled now .... I can see lots of grumpy Kiwi's as a lot will be heading over for holidays this time of year

Update: 11.05am HURRICANE Daman, which is expected to hit parts of Vanua Levu today has forced the suspension of flights in and out of Nadi and other domestic airports.

An Air Pacific flight for Auckland which was earlier suspended indefinitely will fly out at midday as scheduled.

Air Terminal Services said most international airline companies have suspended flights until further notice.

An Air New Zealand flight that was to have arrived from Auckland this morning will arrive tomorrow afternoon instead.

Pacific Blue flights in and out of Nadi have been suspended also.

Local airline, Air Fiji says all its flights will be suspended from midday today until further notice.

Passengers booked for their flights today are being informed of the changes.

Hmm possibly... the current itinerary is;

Auckland (today), Nuku'alofa (Wednesday), Vava'u (Thursday), Yasawa (Saturday), Dravuni (Sunday), Suva (Monday) then back to Auckland.

I guess if they're concerned about it, the might reverse the itinerary and go to Fiji first and then come back through Tonga calling at Nuku'alofa last.
