Geocaching on cruise ships?

I enjoyed reading this thread after a random search on "geocaching" on CC. We found more than a dozen caches on our Alaska cruise tour in 2004. We even hid a travel bug in Earthquake Park in Anchorage that made it part way home before being hijacked to Maryland, then getting lost.

It was a great way to plan "on our own" shore excursions although we did fit in a quick one on a visit to the Raptor Center in Sitka.

DH also enjoyed watching the GPS as we entered or left ports. Also realized at Hubbard Glacier that the GPS map was showing land, not ice as the map said we were nearly a mile from land when we were actually quite close to the glacier face.

We are hoping to do some geocaching on our European cruise this summer

Different destination, different ship (NCL heading around the Hawaiian Islands May 4) but thought I'd chime is as another geocacher. We go by geospyder here and on the Geocaching.com. While on trips we tend to let the caches determine where we'll go. We've never been disappointed and have seen many great areas that the locals aren't even aware of. Cache on!

Has anyone heard of geocaching on cruise ships? For those of you who haven't heard of it, it's an activity where you use GPSs to find hidden caches around the world. I've already checked and they are located on the islands we'll be visiting on the Legend in March, but wondered about on ship.

Lovewater :)

Was on the ncl dawn march 2013 and there was a large group of geocaching very popular from what they told me

We have been Geocaching for almost 10 years! We always plan to hit a few Geocaches in each port. While visiting Rome and Athens (NCL Cruise) this past spring, planned our route through each of the cities based on caches and saw some really great places off the normal tourist paths.

Brought my GPS (Ipad 3g) to the caribbean but could not get the gps to work once we left Ft Lauderdale. Went to the southern and western caribbean. The entire time it showed me as either in Port Everglades or the GPS reported "No Fix". Frustrated as heck!

Thanks for this thread! Fun to read.

I don't geocache but on one cruise, I knew a friend was traveling 2 weeks later on the same ship. I hid a message for him and gave him some clues to find it. He's a psych drug rep so the note I left asked if he'd taken his (certain med) today. When he got back he told me he'd found it, undisturbed, and got a kick out of it. His girlfriend didn't believe his story of searching for something left for him. Sure, somebody left a note, for you, on this ship, yeah. Until he showed it to her.:D

You needed wifi/network service to work with ipad. Gps uses satellites in space

My geocaching gps is a Magellan eXPlorist GC made for geocaching. I preload my caches for whereever i am going and use cell phone when i have data just for extra info if needed.

Very accurate. Can find them for between $120-200online depending where you look.

Okay all, a "DUH" moment! but maybe in port? But I must say, it's like Easter Egg Hunts and Johnny Depp treasure hunting all rolled up in one. Okay...so there's no eggs...gold...or JD, but darn if it's not a good time!

ADFREE, I'm glad there's someone out there that knows what I'm talking about. I will be checking out the caches on the islands. I recently found a "Surrender Da Booty" pirate travel bug that started off in the Bahamas at the Pirate Museum. It will be the first time I hunt out of the states. Wish me luck. :D

I realize I am WAY late to this rodeo... but we are avid geocachers as well. By now I'm sure you have been enjoying grabbing caches at the ports of call... BUT you can indeed do a bit of a "treasure hunt" on each ship (no GPS required) ;) Each ship has a "lucky coin" hidden on it, which was placed there by the ship builders... we like to search them out on each ship (they are always incased in a box). Happy Caching!

I'm even LATER to this game, but my amiga got me hooked on cache-ing also earlier this year. I started a private page on that book-face place called Carnival Cache for geocache lovers to post hints, tips and finds...not everyone wants to turn on their phone internationally or run the risk of having to pay ridiculous roaming fees, so having prior knowledge of approximates on board or in port would be fun for those of us who don't mind a little extra scavenger-y challenge.:)
