QV is no liner

QV is 600 yds off our port side pitching badly into a into a force 6 gale.

All ships pitch - the issues for passenger comfort are roll - how well it is controlled - and how smoothly the ship pitches - and then of course there's heave.......

Not sure if you know we use heave as a non-nautical term on this side of the pond (and while on it, too, sometimes)

Here too.....how about swaying, surging, yawing or rolling, to complete our set with pitch & heave!

(For the non-technically minded Wikipedia explains all:

For what it is worth, Captain Wright said a couple of times last week (after we had passed through some pretty rough weather) that he and his fellow officers had been very impressed with how the QV had coped - this being its first proper test of severe conditions.

Can't agree more, she was made to slice through the waves at full speed, not bob up-and-down on them.

Exactly, a few days ago we left Madeira on the QE2 when conditions peaked at a force 10 ( Thats almost as much wind as comes out of David Pepper ) and although things were indeed 'Choppy' :) We kept and almost constant 25 knots which helped greatly.

Marie-Louise,

Perhaps your friend on the QV merely thought she saw the QE2 pitching, when in truth, it was the platform upon which she was standing which was heaving to and fro and pitching up and down. that would make it LOOK like QE2 was pitching!

Of course, QE2 is no gaudy upstart. A lady would not pitch so, though an eager pup, ready to test her water-wings might try to surge forward, champing at the bit!

Or not!

On a lighter note, I read that all three Queens will rendez-vous in NY harbour at the time of their departure from there on 13 Jan and sail around the Statue of Liberty while fireworks go off.

Only chance to see all three of them together in NY harbour. Does anyone know of a webcam that will be capturing this event. Or a web-cast?

Trustfully, in NY harbour, the passengers will not have to worry too much about heaving, pitching or other nautical dances ships do!!!

Hehe, exactly, I think the sea is the same for both of us:D .

Having a wonderful time on the QV

Sharon

The seas are the same - the ships are not.

If Osbourne House wasn't trying to keep up with us, then we'd be able to do a decent speed - and then you'd see how the ship coped. Only it would only be a brief look......

I'm somewhat confused by those posting from QE2 - Since you love being on her so very much, why do you want to speed to NY? It would seem you would enjoy the opportunity to slog along with "Osbourne House" (very cute!) and spend an extra day or two at sea. As they say, getting there is half the fun - actually we believe all the fun! So enjoy!

It's hard to explain. It's about the power of her engines. It's about appreciating what this magnificent ship can do. Those of us who love her are very proud of what she can do.

Would you rather have a glorious gallop on a sleek, beautiful horse or a bumpy walk on a pokey mule?
