Another tip question.

I paid all my tips on our first cruise and will on all cruises in the future. My wife was asking what would happen if you had the tips removed and then didnt pay any at the end of the cruise. Again, we would never do this cause we believe in tipping, but has anyone else done this or know of anybody that has?

Once you remove the tips from your account, there is no way for them to know if you went ahead and tipped with cash or to whom. I'm sure that there are people that do that all the time. I think it's unfortunate, because the staff works very hard and I think deserves far more than the auto tip amount.

This is the type of "what if" question that will inevitably lead to a long drawn out thread lol. :D

Just leave the auto tips in place and tip extra in cash to the particular employee if you want. After 2 cruises, I would only consider removing the auto tips for absolutely horrible service.

I believe it should be mandatory and then if there is a problem you should go to the pursers desk and take care of it. All I saw on our first cruise was alot of hard working crew. They deserve the tips. We are getting ready to book our second cruise on the Conquest for May 11th. Cant wait!!

No one would get a tip.........that's all. Nothing more.

I too remove the auto tips. I actually had a room steward get caught going thru our stuff.

Tip in cash at the end, they get to keep it all and there is no one else taking a percentage up the line including CCL who must be taking an administration fee for the massive accounting they must be doing.

The time I've ever had a mandatory tip trip was in at an all-inclusive resort-and cruises are not all inclusive.

I have the salsa and nachos here-sorry, they're chicken, not beef. :)

A survey was posted here on CC and stated something like 90% of people that remove the tips either don't tip at all, or tip well under the standard... I don't remove the tips because they get paid quicker with the auto-gratuity program and anything I tip them in addition is theirs to keep... If I had a problem with someone that warranted reduction of tips (never have, and probably hopefully, never will), I would first bring it up to the staffmember, if that didn't resolve it I would bring it up to the purser and if that didn't take care of it I would reduce only that portion of the gratuity and explain to the staffmember why I was doing so. But if you choose not to tip, they simply don't get paid... but I would imagine it would be looked upon as the staffmember not performing their job properly and could hurt them in other ways...

Also, the made up administrative fee was brought up here a few weeks ago and several CC members verified there is no administrative fee, the system is VERY easy with the auto gratuity, MUCh easier than writing paychecks... so don't believe the "hype", no admin fee.

I have been on ten cruises and I can assure you that I have never received service from the staff and crew that has been worth less than $10 per day!!!

I haven't been on that many, YET, but I agree... I have never rec'd anything but tip-deserving care and attitudes.

I always bring cash to add to the auto-tip...

If you remove the tips nothing would happen at the end of the cruise. Tipping or not tipping is up to you according to the level of service received. End of story.

Exactly...it IS a personal choice on how and who to tip. I remove the tips the first day and REWARD the people who deserve it. I have never been on a cruise where I tipped less than the suggested amount.

I have never tipped in a restaurant, hotel or casino BEFORE services are rendered.

To each his/her own.

Just for clarification, unless you pay your grats in advance, you aren't tipping before the services are rendered.... your bill is not charged until the final day of the cruise. Nothing is charged until the final day of your cruise... your grats will be charged at that time, the end of the cruise :)

Please help me out here:

I have never sailed on Carnival before and am looking forward to my first cruise with them. Almost all of my experience has been with RCCL which does not have auto-tipping. On RCCL, they have "suggested" amounts to leave for your Cabin Attendant, Waiter, Assistant Waiter and the Head Waiter. On the second to the last night of the cruise, the cabin attendant leaves envelopes labeled for each of the above mentioned crew members. The idea being that you either put cash in the envelopes or, go to the Pursor and get vouchers (only available in the amount of the "suggested" tip for each.) If you get vouchers and want to give, say your cabin attendent more, you supplement the voucher with cash. Then, on the last night of the cruise, you personally give each their own envelope. A pretty simple system.

I am understanding from various threads I have read here that Carnival will automatically debit your shipboard account for a certain percentage and then take this money and pass it around to the cabin attendant, waiters, head waiter, folks working on the Lido deck, etc. Is this correct? And if you want to give your cabin attendant or waiters and head waiter a little extra, you just do that. Do they pass out evelopes for the extra? We always give over what is suggested as these folks work their fannies off and most are trying to support a family they only get to see every 6 - 9 months.

Thanks for any help you can give in explaining the tipping system on Carnival.

Richard, yes... you have it right. They will add $10 per person/per day to your S&S account. They have a set amount that goes to the wait staff, the cabin steward and the lido staff. The cabin steward actually pays their assistant out of their tips... If you want to tip extra, you most certainly can directly to them, I generally leave a card with money inside... It's a very nice system and in talking to the employees they enjoy it because they get stiffed less, and they get paid faster... and the guests don't have to track everyone down or worry about who gets what... Have a great cruise!!!

Thank you Lucy!

We'll take some "Thank You" cards along to cram a little extra in (if warranted). We don't mind chasing folks down to say good-bye. (Of course, on RCCl, you never have a problem finding them because they want to make sure they see you so they can get their envelopes.)

My wife and I have always felt that getting acquainted and having fun with your cabin attendent, waiter, asst. waiter and head waiter are one of the most enjoyable parts of the cruise so a proper Good-bye is important.

Thanks again for clarifying the tipping process on Carnival.

I understand that. I still remove them. My choice ;)
