Demographics and the "Requested Dress Code"
So if the dress code carries over for the entire evening how do you ever dine casual?

Do they close the casual dining areas?

Is this true every night?

Is this posted on the website?

I've talked to a few recent Celebrity cruises and they never heard of the dining room dress code being for the entire evening.

I guess I will call Celebrity to get this sorted out.
Hi Shipyard Cruiser :)

The wording in Celebrity's daily is dress code "after 6:00 PM". That means that people who have second seating should also be in formal attire after 6:00 PM, even though they don't eat until around 8:30 PM. However, it is not uncommon to see people in their casual day clothes during that interval because many choose late seating so they can spend more time relaxing during the day.

Technically, people who eat in the casual dining venue can only use that part of the ship which includes the pool area, but every time I have been in the casino with my formal clothes, I have been in the minority. It appears the dress code is not enforced in the casino because with all the smoke in that area it would be silly to do so. I have also seen people dressed casually in the disco area on formal night.

The problem is for people who eat in the casual dining venue and want to go to the show or dance to a live band after dinner, because the after six dress code appears to be enforced in those venues.

Not that I can find.

Called and they stated there is no rule baning casual dress in bars, shows and casinos.

You DO need to follow the dress code to attend the Captain's party.

This is talking about dining areas, not bars and casinos.

Also this is not the complete web site quote.

In the web site FAQ under dress code the word "May" is used before the type of dress.

Personally, I wouldn't count on ANYTHING I heard from Celebrity's phone reps. They tend to be wrong more often than they are right. About EVERYTHING, that is... I wouldn't trust them to answer whether the ship is going to sail above the water or under the water...

Evening Dress Codes
Celebrity's evening dress codes include three types: formal, casual and informal. The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the appropriate evening attire.

Formal Night Attire
Ladies: Evening gown or fancy dress
Gentlemen: Tuxedo, dinner jacket or dark suit

Informal Night Attire
Ladies: Informal dress or pants and blouse
Gentlemen: Jacket and tie with slacks

Casual Night Attire
Ladies: Pantsuit or sporty outfit
Gentlemen: Sport shirt and slacks

Dining in jeans detracts from the overall ambience and is therefore not allowed in the main dining room after 6:00pm. Evening dress codes apply to both main restaurant dining as well as specialty restaurant dining*.
Before Six
Dining options abound aboard Celebrity. For breakfast and lunch, jeans, shorts and casual daywear are allowed in all dining venues before 6:00pm. After 6:00pm, this attire is allowed only in casual restaurants and cafés. Renting formalwear
Formal evenings call for formal attire. Arrange for tailored, elegant formalwear to be delivered directly to your stateroom with Cruiseline Formalwear. With an elegant line of eveningwear for ladies and classic, stylish formalwear for men, you'll look as famous as you feel. To order, visit www.cruiselineformal.com Formal Nights
Celebrity Cruises' elegant, formal evenings include the Captain's Welcome Cocktail Party and Dinner, the Captain's Farewell Dinner, and a third or fourth "formal" night for those cruises sailing more than seven nights. Eveningwear should be planned for according to the length of your cruise. The following schedule outlines the number of formal nights you'll enjoy:

shipyard - As you can see this is directly from the X site. Casual attire is supposed to be limited to "casual restaurants and cafes". That leaves out most bars, the theater, the casino... As I'm reading things, you're arguing whether it's 6 of 1 or 1/2 doz of the other. You're sort of stating the same things, just differently. If you plan to break the dress code, just say it. If you plan to adhere to the dress code BY STICKING TO THE CASUAL VENUES, say that. But I think at some point, we all have to agree, personal, and VERY liberal interpretation of the dress code isn't going to actually CHANGE the dress code. (I know how you enjoy the use of "code", so I used it as much as possible:D;):D)

Don't take every word an X rep says as gospel. That goes for your TA as well. Remember, these boards are FILLED with threads about bad advice and mistakes made by X reps and TA's. Maybe your fellow pax advice should be viewed with equal value? I hope you enjoy your 1st X cruise!!!

Happy cruising!

I have to agree with you. Half the time when I call I get some Idiot over at RCL that is completely unfamiliar with Celebrities policies and seem to treat both companies as one which they are not.

While some may disagree with me, the short RCL cruises like on Monarch to Ensenada are fun as we have done them....but we also call them the redneck riviera booze cruises from the demographics they seem to attract. From our experience there is DEFINETLY no dress code or anything close to one, and its almost a free for all. We do go slummin' sometimes just to keep it real.

I sometimes think CS has it in their mind frame that the same applies to Celebrity as well.

Thank you.

My TA has been on about 150 cruises.

I would take her word over anyone on Cruise Critic.

And yes, she said I should follow the dining dress code which I always do.

But I don't stress about it.

And it's not the reason I choose a cruise line.

Happy cruising to all of you.

Hmmmm. Shipyard - This response seems unusually sharp from you rather than your usual humor filled voice. I hope I didn't offend you with my post. I always enjoy lively discussion with you and I certainly NEVER meant to upset you. I sincerely apologize if I offended.

I'm glad you have a TA which you trust so completely. I'm sorry you don't trust your fellow posters on Cruise Critic. The only dress code I REQUIRE my fellow pax follow is to wear a glow of happiness, however it's nice to know you follow the dress code. I'm happy to read you don't stress about "it". And I truly believe that dress code SHOULD be one of the factors when deciding upon a cruise line. We all want to be comfortable when cruising, that should include itin, $, amenities, activities, food, service, manner of dress......those and much more should all be part of the equation.

Happy cruising!

Thanks for the kind words:)

It's not that I don't trust folks from Cruise Critic. Love all the good info on the Roll Call boards.

I think sometimes it's hard to pull out facts from all the opinion. This is a problem for any type of internet board, not just Cruise Critic.

Let me apologize to you. I enjoy your post very much.

Keep on cruising.

Shippy - Again the most distinct difference between X and RCCL is this dress issue, and it's evident while on board X ships. But I swear to you, once you get to the casino, the clothes are off and few follow the dress of the evening following dinner. If you are seating dining, those guests are the large majority in dress as they pass through to try their luck. Its pretty wild walking in there after dinner dresses in style against a back drop of most quite casual.

It has always been Celebrity's written policy that the dress code is for the evening. This isn't even debatable to anyone who has been on a Celebrity ship. Many of us have actually seen people not dressed properly refused entry to various venues outside the dining room. There is no interpretation of their written policy so some may bend it any way they want and if someones TA says it is not the policy then that TA is dead wrong.

With all that being said, whether Celebrity enforces their own policies is what should be discussed not what the policy is as that is clear.

So if I have second seating and leave the dining room at 10PM how long do I stay in my suit or jacket and dress shirt before I can change? (Did I get it all right:D )

Shipyard - :)

Now about this post.... You've got to try OUR schedule! At ~7:00pm you begin the 'dressing up' process (lounge in tub/shower, giggle, hair/make-up, giggle, etc.;)). Head to dinner at ~8:20pm. At ~ 10:00pm depart dining rm and head back to cabin exhausted from a long day of doing nothing productive except recharging your soul. Maybe our schedule is the key to my DH enjoying a tux - he's not in it for long!;):p

HAHAHHAHA!!
PLEASE tell me you are on OUR cruise!

Ack....we, meaning our daughter who ALWAYS dresses appropriately for dinner, DH and I, and I truly am saying that we adhere to the rules because that is what cruising mean to us, we do "relax" VERY late into the evening.....I have MANY photos of the 3 of us in formal attire on EVERY cruise we have embarked upon and, knowing that we have booked a cruise, we "understand" the rules of "dress" and "adhere" with pleausre accdordingly.......

We do plan to book on Regent or Silverseas very soon and naturally, will dress accordingly.....

BUT if we want to "disrobe" after dinner and take a swim, which is RARE for us on a cruise, I would hope that our behavior would not be regarded as...........well, fill in the blanks..............:)

As for your last paragraph. I frequently suggest on these type of threads that wearing 'Birthday Suits' would solve all the debate. I'm pleased to read that you agree. Disrobe away!;):D
