librarian Posted January 26, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 26, 2008 I know for cruise lines there is a web site you can find where your cruise ship will dock. This can be done a long time in advance. My question is there a website you can find where your river cruise will dock in given cities in Europe? Or is there a website which shows general vicinities? I will be gone for about 26 days on a river cruise and was curious to see. Several cities were cities I have been before. Thanks in advance for any knowledge you can share. Rare steamboats Posted January 26, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 26, 2008 There is no website where you can find where your river cruise ship is docking. Usually there are a number of docking spaces in each port. The captain knows the exact space a couple of hours prior to arrival. In many towns the ships are docking side by side (up to three ships next to each other) and you walk through the other ship when you want to go ashore. Most of the landings are close to the downtown area. Some are not like Nuremberg or Vienna (but there´s a subway station close to the Handelskai landing, not so for Nussdorf). In some ports on the Rhine river (lower Rhine) the ships can´t dock in the downtown area. Some cities only have an industrial port where the cruise ships have to dock too. My best advice: Make a virtual trip with Google Earth (or Google Maps). In most towns you can see cruise ships docking. Examples: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=de&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=handelskai,+vienna&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.28862,59.765625&ie=UTF8&ll=48.268608,16.363969&spn=0.001603,0.003648&t=h&z=18&om=0 Vienna, Nussdorf http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=de&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=handelskai,+vienna&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.28862,59.765625&ie=UTF8&ll=48.226474,16.406257&spn=0.006418,0.014591&t=h&z=16&om=0 Vienna, Handelskai http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=de&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=passau,+rathausplatz&sll=48.226474,16.406257&sspn=0.006418,0.014591&ie=UTF8&ll=48.575329,13.469903&spn=0.001594,0.003648&t=h&z=18&om=0 Passau http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=de&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=regensburg&ie=UTF8&ll=49.020127,12.10526&spn=0.003159,0.007296&t=h&z=17&om=0 Regensburg http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=de&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=n%C3%BCrnberg,+donaustra%C3%9Fe&sll=49.020127,12.10526&sspn=0.003159,0.007296&ie=UTF8&ll=49.404886,11.069713&spn=0.006269,0.014591&t=h&z=16&om=0 Nueremberg http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=de&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=budapest&ie=UTF8&ll=47.485077,19.058104&spn=0.003255,0.007296&t=h&z=17&om=0 Budapest steamboats
Karen NY Posted February 20, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 20, 2008 Thanks for the links to the docking area! We are staying in Nuremberg for a few days before our Christmas cruise - in the Old Town. We will need our own transfers to the ship in Nuremberg, do you know know the best method to get there, like how much would a cab be?
Rare steamboats Posted February 21, 2008 #4 Share Posted February 21, 2008 Karen NY, Yes, a cab would be the best way to get there. There´s no public transportation close to the docking area (I think there´s a bus running over the bridge but it´ll be too far to walk with luggage). steamboats
CPT Trips Posted February 21, 2008 #5 Share Posted February 21, 2008 It would be a good idea to get the telephone number for the ship before you head off to Germany. As Steamboats mentioned, they may not know exactly where they will dock until they are there. with the phone number you can call from the hotel and have a location to give to the taxi driver. It may save a lot of angst.

We'll be flying in same-day, so I guess a cab would be our only option. Sounds like I'd better have lots of Euros:p
Walking Tom Posted March 25, 2015 #7 Share Posted March 25, 2015 You may want to look at UBER car service for transfers. Not available in all locations but useful where it can be found. App for your PDA, bills directly to credit card or paypal account linked to app.
