lives to cruise Posted February 9, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2008 Does anybody know how difficult it is to get from Islip Airport in Long Island to the Pier in N.Y.C.? We are trying to fiqure out if it would be worth taking advantage of Southwest Airlines $48.00 each way fare.
GTJ Posted February 9, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 9, 2008 Islip's MacArthur Airport is not very convenient for getting to and from New York. If the fare to Islip is significantly less than to LaGuardia, Kennedy, or Newark, and you're willing to endure some travel (including the time it takes), then go for it. It is about 50 miles or so, and a car service will probably run about $100. A bit less expensive--but still time competitive--is to get a short $5 taxi ride to the nearby Ronkonkoma LIRR station; then about $10 on the LIRR to Penn. http://www.macarthurairport.com http://www.mta.info

That is if the pier is actually in the city or in Brooklyn. If in Brooklyn, this option won't work too well.
Budget Queen Posted February 9, 2008 #4 Share Posted February 9, 2008 It's about an hour and 20 min ride via LIRR. IF you have plenty of time, and pack light, no more than one medium rolling bag, it may be worthwhile.
phantomtales Posted February 11, 2008 #5 Share Posted February 11, 2008 You could try a shuttle sompany called Classic Coach. If the price difference does not match the airfare from JFK or LGA then go for it... If it is close in price, go for a city airport.
Name game Posted February 11, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 11, 2008 If the car service fare really will be only $100 and you have plenty of time, then do it. To lug your luggage on the LIRR and then get to the pier from Penn Station will be a total hassle. And what someone else wrote, if the pier is in Brooklyn, it might not work. The travel time from Islip to Manhattan and back is going to be quite long. Figure on at least an hour and a half each way to be on the safe side. greatam Posted February 11, 2008 #7 Share Posted February 11, 2008 It will cost (total cost) almost EXACTLY the same to fly from BWI to ISP + transport to Manhattan as flying BWI to LGA and transport to Manhattan. Total RT fare for one person on SW is $117.00. PLUS AT LEAST $100 one way EASY transport from ISP to Manhattan. Unless you are only taking a carryon, the taxi/train/taxi combo will be a tremendous hassle. You can take the Hampton Jitney into NYC for $25.00 one way. BUT you have at least a $25 taxi fare from the airport to where you meet the Hampton Jitney. I have taken the train, the shuttle and a taxi to Manhattan. All except the taxi were a BIG hassle. The taxi from the airport door to Manhattan was slightly over $100.00. American and US Airways both fly from BWI to LGA for $169.00 all in. Taxi from LGA to Manhattan is about $40.00. So, unless you choose the complicated way to get from ISP to Manhattan, you are actually saving money flying into LaGuardia.
