Is wearing a watch necessary?

Recommended Posts

I wear a watch because I put it on without thinking. It does come in handy though when you need to meet up with friends at a certain time. And contrary to belief there are not that many clocks in public areas on a ship.

A water proof watch is a good idea if you are planning on spending time by the pool.

That is how I am, I feel funny without one and have some that match my outfits, even formal ones.

You can get a waterproof Casio for little more than $25 or so, Target, Sears, Penneys...any of these places will have them.

And yes, I always wear a watch on vacation. And quite often at home as well. I don't always have my cell phone (yeah you heard me :p ), and I prefer to keep track of the time. In fact, I have FIVE watches.

Hello, my first RC cruise will be May 10-17 on the Liberty of the Seas.

I'm wondering how important a watch is while on the cruise. Do you typically wear one? If not, are there clocks all around? I assume a watch would be helpful for dinner reservations, excursions while not on the boat, etc.

I'm considering buying a waterproof watch before the trip. I appreciate any insight.

Since you have only two posts:

Are you serious or you just getting a kick out of the answers?

Because if you are serious and you go for the first time on RCI on the biggest ship (not boat) in the fleet and you worry about a watch  ...I'd suggest easycruise.com. They have boats...

My suggestion is: you are a troll.

Heck no. You don't need a watch.

Why would I get a "kick" out of the answers? They are helpful. Sorry if I offended you with my terminology. I'll try harder next time.

Anyways..I did some watch shopping online yesterday and I'm leaning towards a Nike sports watch. It has a polyurethane band so I think it will be good in the water. Of course I will stick to my Tag Heuer for formal night!

Thanks for the advice all (well to those that actually provided advice).

I think it was a great question. Even after printing out a very helpful packing list from this website...I didn't bring a watch. It listed a battery operated alarm clock for the cabin. But didn't remind for wrist watches. My husband and I don't typically use one because we constantly have our cellphones for time. But on the ships, we aren't walking around with our cellphones and there aren't many clocks on the ship. The only one I saw was on the promenade deck. My husband was smart enough to bring his waterproof watch because he knew he'd be snorkeling, but that left me bugging him...constantly for the time. Time is important on cruises, even when on the ship, if you want to participate in the activities on the Compass...and as others have mentioned...getting your butt back on the ship before it leaves.

Next time, I'm going to bring my own watch...my husband will sure appreciate it.

We used a cellphone last year and got to dinner an hour late on the first night. The were nice enough to let us eat dinner in the dining room...we were embarassed to say the least. We went to an on board shop and picked up $10 water-proof watch (lights up and has an alarm) which I bring to every cruise.

A watch is critical. Some critical times not to be missed onboard ship:

1) meals - need to get there early to have 2nds/3rds

2) naps - need to schedule them inbetween meals

3) casino opening - need to get to the $5 Blackjack table or stand there watching others lose their money

4) shows - knowing how long to delay/stall till the show has already started and then you can relax as it would not be proper to go to a show already started

5) excursions - it is not good to miss the ship

I am sure there are other reasons, but the above are mine.

What a dumb question.

Do you have your Ipod playing the words "breathe in, breathe out" just in case you forget?

And before you ask, yes it is also necessary to take the following

deoderant

toothpaste and brush

underwear

passport

luggage

money

yourself

I have seen people make snide comments if a person only has one post and its a negative review. I usually see remarks such as, why didn't you post before, why didn't you do reasearch before, etc.

Now we have a person that IS trying to do some research beforehand, and he still gets negative comments.

He had a question about a watch, and asked it, just because you don't like his language does not mean you should give him an attitude. After all, there was a time when you only had 1-2 posts yourself.

People use whatever language they want to... I have been cruising for 18yrs, and sometimes I call it a boat, not a ship.

Dumb question? Hmm, how about the ones that ask if you should bring an over the door shoe rack, or asking about hair dryers. A watch seems much more practical than those.

Sorry that I asked but your first post on here was in regards to a watch on board or not. For me, looking back at my first cruise I hardly was worried about a watch. The ships back then were much smaller yet I was still curious what to expect in general. You are going on your first cruise on RCI, jumping right onto the biggest ship currently sailing the oceans. So the watch question is rather suspicious.

You didn't offend me at all. I was simply wondering.

The word boat and ship is a pet peeve of mine. Just like the aft balcony. But I usually don't say anything and most of the time play along. I always say "its a ship not a boat" even to friends. :D

I don't think there is anything wrong with making a first post. We all been there. But if you look at some of the first posts you simply wonder if they are actually serious.

If someone posts something on a public messageboard they are subject to answers. We all are. Sometimes those answers are positive, sometimes negative. That goes for all of us. Either we cope with all of the answers or we are just simply ignoring the not so favorable answers/responses.

If I post something or ask a question I always expect positive and negative reactions. I can handle both. Some people can only handle positives. And just because someone can not handle negative responses it should not negate the right for others to reply to any given post at any given time. ;)

EDIT: Look at the difference between two first posts

Warning, from experience, if you have a self setting watch that gets signals from the atomic clock, beware that it might change time if you are out of reach of a signal, or pick up a different signal We nearly missed formal dinner because of my watch changing.

Bill,

An atomic watch doesn't know which time zone you're in. The only way it could tell time zones is if it had a GPS, and it doesn't have a GPS. It picks up only one signal from Colorado. It won't change time when you change time zones, but it may change time for daylight savings time.

I googled "@@#$% watch" but couldn't find where to buy one. I can't seem to find that brand anywhere! Can you suggest another brand? :D  :D

I have no clue where to find one. I just cut and pasted that brand name from a previous post that had advised Gonzo to buy that type of watch. I figured it must be a popular brand but I guess not.

I just realized I forgot to wear my watch to work today. I also forgot to bring my cheese plate today for our little bday party for a colleague. Man, I really could have used some coffee before I left home today!

 I don't get the snarky replies at all. So many people have their cell phones attached to their hips these days, they don't even wear a watch anymore, and it would be easy to overlook it as a possibly necessary item.

When I was snorkeling out on Trunk Bay, I was very glad I had my waterproof watch on, so we could stay in the water up until the last minute! ;)

The only time I wear a watch is when I'm cruising. I buy them on board at the $10 shop. They have some pretty good ones and it makes a great souvenir. I don't want to be late for the ice show, spa appointment, dinner or M&M party.:D
