Who Has Booked Alaska for '09???

Four (and possibly 6) of us plan a southbound cruise on Celebrity Millenium (cruise starts 9/11) or Coral Princess (cruise starts 9/14), preceded by either a cruisetour by the line we choose or an independent tour. I have 2 questions:

(1) I absolutely love Celebrity and wonder if the Coral Princess is as nice - food and service, etc., and

(2) has anyone experienced a cruisetour on either line. My question is about escorted vs. not escorted. All of the Celebrity cruisetours have an escort (same one throughout), with additional guides at various stops and the escort arranges everything - including luggage handling, etc. and that some of the luggage would be kept on the bus (if we want it) for delivery to the ship at the end of the tour. The way Princess explained their arrangements is that unless you buy one of the longer, more expensive "Escorted Tours," the others are a set itinerary, but with different guides and drivers at each stop. The Princess rep. also told me that luggage handling was not necessarily included at each stop - depended on the hotel, etc. and that all of the luggage would travel with us from place to place, since we would be using different buses, etc. This would be a problems, since one of our party is elderly and will not be able to handle her own luggage.

We may decide to do our own tour, in which case these questions are moot, but this will be important if we do the cruisetour option.

Love hearing all of your plans and am really looking forward to this trip.

Hope to hear your advice.

Thanks.

We've booked "Celebrity Mercury" ... Sept 6, 2009 for our 1st Alaskan cruise.

RT out of Vancouver, BC ... Sea Day ...Sitka ... Hubbard Glacier ... Juneau ... Ketchikan ... Inside Passage and back to Vancouver.

We've always done "warm weather" cruises so this is our first taste of a "cooler" climate cruise.

Pat :)

Whoo Hoo! 4 of us are booked, my sister and her daughter, our friend from college days and I have balcony cabins reserved and ready. There is a roll call started, so come and join it! My sister is the only one who has cruised Alaska before and the rest of us are way too excited considering how long we still have to wait! :D

We have chosen HAL Veendam Northbound ex Vancouver June 28 2009, followed by another week of independent travel in Alaska. We are holding off booking as DW is having knee surgery shortly and wants to check that her recovery is as planned before committing to a potentially arduous trip or risking forfeiting deposits if we had to bail out. Hopefully about 3 months out there may well be bargain fares to be had if the economy doesn't pick up quickly.

I see that several people have put a case for doing the land content first and then relaxing onboard ship on the way South. Our feeling is that we prefer the mounting excitement of travelling toward an unknown destination and seeing it progressively revealed.

Now how silly is that!!! I try and sail out of SF whenever I can. Just got back from the Dawn Princess to Alaska out of SF and have booked the Infinity out of SF for May 11. If someone is prone to sea sickness there are plenty of meds that can be taken. Relax and have a great time and don't listen to some who would like to bring you down.

Have booked Serenade from San Francisco on 2nd May.It will be our 2nd Alaska trip and cant wait ! Just a bit concerned it might be a bit early in the season weatherwise. As we are coming from Europe I wanted to book something a bit longer than just the 7 nights. We did a pre cruise in Vancouver last time round.

hmmm I just read the whole thread and didn't see anyone else on my cruise out of SF. I wonder if I should be nervous....

Well, I can't find anyone booked on our trip out of S.F. on June 23rd. Maybe the 23rd of June and July we'll have the ship to ourselves.

In late July/early August, we are spending a week in Washington state visiting Mt Rainier, Mt St Helens, Olympic National Park, an orca trip/boat tour of the San Juan Islands, and 2 days in Seattle. Then we are taking a RT cruise on the HA Zaandam!

It looks like Ginjer2911 is correct. The Volendam is scheduled to cruise out of Vancouver on May 20th. And the Zuiderdam is scheduled for the 23rd!
