Names on staterooms

Who really cares what color stripe is on the name tag? Everyone

(stewards, crew, passengers) should treat all passengers equally. Maybe

it's for those other societies which are so class conscious.

Perhaps a newbie should be treated better since they may or may not

become repeat customers.

Who knows, maybe those with Captain Circle/Elite

are flagged by the crew and checked out to see if they caused problems (noise, disorderly conduct), cheap with tips and what not on past

cruises!

Do people really care? Obviously so....

First, I put up the post about checking the name tags as a joke - perhaps its not being class conscious that's the issue but people who have little sense of humor or perhaps are feeling left out?

In any case, I have never seen a Princess employee treat any passenger with anything less than the utmost respect, no matter what color cruise card they have - even when the passenger wasn't doing the same. That being said, I have shown my loyalty to Princess after 20 cruises - something that the majority of you have not - and I appreciate their thanking me by providing the Elite perks I enjoy and recognizing that I am a long time customer and welcoming me back. Stick with Princess long enough and perhaps you'll understand.

As for "newbies" (where does that word come from anyway? It's so trite) they often times are treated better - have you ever compared fares offered to new passengers vs. those offered to long time passengers? Might surprise you.

I haven't had that happen but I suppose I wouldn't like anyone going through the drawers looking for stuff.
Hey Ethel - I forgot to tell you what I got on my last trip...towel animals!!  :D

Same here... Princess Cruise #3 in July. Difference is, you did them all in one year. It took us 11 years!!

Yeah, we are making up for lost time, lol. My husband just retired 11 months ago so we are free to book anytime. I wish we were going on the Golden Princess instead of the Dawn. After a short cruise on her I don't like it at all. I am going with an open mind and chalking the one I hated on everyone getting ready to sail to San Francisco for their first trip to Alaska. But after being on the Diamond, I think I am spoiled to the "nicer" ships. :(

I know that this is off topic, but could you tell us what you think is not 'nice' about Dawn Princess? Except for being smaller and a bit older, she's pretty much the same as the larger, newer ships.

We got towel animals twice and Karen's cabin with the kids got them 3 or 4 times. The kids were very excited by them.

We were cruising on the Crown last summer with our 9 & 6 year olds - they went with their new friends to their friend's cabin, we knew which deck they were one, and what general area it was, but we couldn't remember the number - so we were very happy to look at the names on the doors to find our kids!! (yes, they would have eventually come looking for us at the pool, but we changed our plans and went looking for them):D I never gave the name issue any thought as the boat is such a secure environment.:)

Interesting thread about the names on the rooms. I´ve never seen it before.

I´m a bit surprised about the many posts about names on the room making it easier to find. I´ve not cruised on Princess as of yet but planning one for 2009 however I´ve been on some cruises on different lines and never had a problem to find my cabin or have seen people lost trying to find their room.Same goes for Hotels.

Are there no room numbers on the cabin doors:confused:

The food in the buffet court was TERRIBLE, the pastries were stale also, almost like they were left over from the day before that they were trying to get rid of. The Casino dealers would not speak to you, even to just make light conversation, I found them darn right rude. We were on the Caribe floor and it smelled musty. On a good note, our room steward was excellent, the show was very good, and aside from the food being bad, the Horizon Court is much nicer then the one on the Diamond, but the waiters were not friendly at all and were non existent when trying to get a refill of coffee or water. No where is it posted that you are supposed to serve yourself your beverages. Not so on the Diamond, they came around and asked what you wanted to drink. There was a topic started on the day we all returned from this Coastal trip and I think everyone had the same complaints. I am due to sail on this ship to Alaska in July and I hope that things improve! Never would have booked this ship if I had sailed on it first!

You can just pull the name tag out of the slot, simple as that. Just make sure there is a way for your kids to locate their stateroom without difficulty. Maybe some little thing on the door or something might work.

BTW-By the name only, nobody will know if it is an adult or child in that stateroom.

While ages aren't listed, it wouldn't be very hard for someone to figure out that when four people are named and two of them are labeled as Miss and Mstr. that they are children.

We have never removed the card, but it has crossed my mind. I just don't really see the need to include the names of minors on something that public where anyone can read it and know there is a child in that cabin.

Thank you - unlike any experience I've had on Dawn Princess...I'm looking forward to sailing her again in September.

In trying to rationalize this, I was thinking that there were MANY MANY young people on board, who's main purpose was to party hardy and had too much to drink. Maybe the crew was tired of them and wanted to get this cruise over with so they could leave for San Francisco to ready for their first Alaskan Cruise. Who knows! I am trying to keep an open mind about the Alaskan cruise and hoping there won't be as many young people on board. And by young, I am talking just barely legal to drink. We shall see.

Two years ago, Princess tried NOT posting passengers' names on their doorway. The result was a lot of lost and confused passengers who couldn't remember their cabin number (especially after a visit to the bar!) I'm glad Princess decided to post the names again.

This could have been me! It is really convienent, IMO.

As for the kids - maybe bring some correction tape or white out, or a Sharpie, and mark through the kid's names.

I have to say that I kind of like having our names on the door. For one, we know it is our room. Secondly on our cruise it made us feel like we were coming home and that was our welcome mat. Either way it doesn't make that big of a difference, but I tend to like them:)

I've been reading this thread and find it very entertaining. With the hundreds of staterooms and names to go with it who has a photographic memory to remember them all. With all there is to do on the ship I can't imagine spending vacation time going through halls reading name cards on stateroom doors.

I have no problem at all with the cruise line posting my name, on the card outside the door. I also like the idea, that it gives the persons captains' circle status as well. If you know the color codes for each status, it tells you who are first time cruisers and who have been on many cruises, etc.:D

I really don't understand why some people would seem to be paranoid about such a simple thing.

When I started this string, I was simply asking the question of why. I'm truly surprised of all of the postings...but glad to see everyone's responses.

I am certainly not paranoid about it, but I must say that I am amused at the rationale proposed by many. As I said, I just found it unusual because we had only sailed previously on HAL's Westerdam and they did not post names. I certainly do not believe that it has anything at all to do anything relating to ship services. Trust me, the stewards and everyone else having to do with ship services knows exactly who is in that stateroom and their status and it has nothing to do with the name tags by the door.

I do find it amusing that the Purser's desk will not tell you who is in a stateroom because of privacy, however you could walk to the stateroom and find out for yourself. I have read somewhere that most of the major cruiselines stopped handing out passenger lists because of privacy. This is not from experience, but I'm sure that when they were handed out they were done in a very elegant manner and would have been a great souvenir, but this is not the world of years gone by, so I certainly understand why this is no longer done.

Thanks everyone for their postings...and I'll hopefully enjoy reading more.

While I couldn't care one way or the other if they post our names, what I find interesting is that some have stated that they can't remember their cabin number? I personally think that's part of the overall experience, knowing what cabin I'm in. Likewise, when I stay at a hotel I have to remember the number of my room there because the hotel isn't gonna post our names on the door. <shrugs> different strokes for different folks and all that:cool:

I'm in agreement with you here as well. I know that every floor looks basically the same, but the same goes for land-based hotels...and there certainly are not names posted there.

This will be my honeymoon cruise. I am thinking that they will have me listed in my 'old' name and my husband with his name. I think it would be wonderful to see Mr. & Mrs. .... on the door each time I entered. Is there a way to get it changed? I will be proud to be his wife and I can't wait to take his name:)

It seems to me, that as someone else mentioned in this thread, if your bothered by having the nameplate on the cabin entrance, remove the card and destroy it. This should take care of any of your concerns about privacy, etc.

If your not happy with the way the notice was typed, go to the Pursers desk and ask for the change(s) that you want and they will do it.
