Worried about smokers on the Century!

Recommended Posts

I am sailing on the Century this April and have been reading the various reviews of the ship. I sailed on the Millenium in March 04 and found the smoking a bit annoying but generally kept to one side of the public areas. I am worried because many reviews complain about the widespread smoking in cabins and public areas. I am very sensitive to smoke and would be very unhappy if my room (sky suite 1208) is smoky or has the smell of smoke. Also, worried that the large veranda experience might be ruined if smokers are on either side of us. Any advice or should I look for another cruise line? No offense directed towards smokers, by the way, I just hate the smell, allergy induced, etc.

Hi:) I don't smoke and I never thought the smell was too strong but the one place that it is smokey is the casino.
But most people abide by the rules......smoking on the PORT SIDE only and there are ashtrays most everywhere you look...lounges, outside at the pool, etc...
No smoking in the dining rooms, theaters, etc.

We were on Century in April and really didn't notice any smoking issues. DH enjoys a cigar ( much to my dismay) after dinner and since we had a balcony room he smoked out there. I have to say though that he is a "polite" smoker- he waited until he was sure that our neighboors on both sides were not on their balconys before lighting up.Although the couple on the right side would never have noticed-they were on their honeymoon and I think we saw them once the entire cruise- Ah young love LOL. We were only in the casino for a short time one afternoon, to spend ten whole dollars on the slots :>)) there were not alot of people there so the smoke was bearable.

The only place it's been a problem for me is in the casino and by the elevators outside the dining room. I guess that because there's no smoking in the dining room the smokers light up as soon as they leave. We always walk down to the next set of elevators after dinner if we need to.

Plus, I've heard that even Carnival is giving up on the Paradise being a totally non-smoking ship. I don't think there's any major line that has a total non-smoking policy. It's amazing what they do in cabins with the cleaning and you probably wouldn't notice if the room had been smoked in by the previous occupant. My point is that there isn't another major line to try, they all allow some level of smoking.

I'll be on the Century next April as well, and I am hoping they enforce the port side only rules.

The idea of smoking in the elevators is really gross.....they are such confined spaces. Thanks for the tip, Terri, of walking to the next set of elevators (even though we almost always take the stairs!)

If you do see someone smoking on the wrong side of the ship, just kindly point out the rules. I am a smoker and had no idea that the rules applied to the outside areas as well. It was not until my 12th cruise when a group of seniors rudely pointed it out to me. I think most people want to follow the rules. Celebrity makes them but does not enforce them. Have fun, you should be fine.

Unless you are going to be on the veranda 24/7, I don't think this would apply. of course, you may find that you and your neighbor's schedules might coincide, in which case, we need to be 'good neighbors' and work out some compromises. Don't forget, your smoking neighbors are entitled to enjoy themselves too, and if smoking is a part of it (bad, good or otherwise), then they should be able to do it.

Hi...I don't think smoking in elevators is permitted anywhere....land, ships, etc.....If you see someone doing that...I would definitely say something.

Hey Lois,

I think (hope) he might of meant by the elevators. A lot of smokers have a hard time going thru five courses and two hours without a cig. Some step right outside the dinning room (by the elevators) and catch a quick smoke during dinner. If not during, as soon as they set one step out of the dinning room. Me, I became good friends with the Rainbow Room staff just around the corner.

We were just on the Century 9/11 sailing. We are smokers, sorry to say. We do, however, make sure to adhere to policy on outside spaces. We don't smoke in our home, and we TRY not to smoke in our cabin, going out on the balcony instead. Have never had problems with neighbors complaints, although we've generally noticed neighbors have tended to be smokers- just coincidence. I appreciate people's sensitivity to smoke, and it can be prevalent in the casino. Always been puzzled by the non-smoking gaming tables in the casino being right next to a smoking table. The casino's are not so large as to have that make a bit of difference for the smoke-sensitive. You will notice the smoke in the Rendezvous lounge area as well, as all the smokers congregate on the port side, and there is a lot of foot traffic going past. We also had a relatively high number of European cruisers on our sailing, and a larger number of them tend to smoke. Also, a considerate idea for the rest of the smokers out there. We bring a spray bottle of Fabreeze with us, and spray around the cabin several times a day. Even if you don't smoke, it does add a fresher smell to the stateroom.

These boards are so helpful. We will be on the Century 1/22. I am a smoker but DH is not. We are in SS 1202. We booked this so that I could take my smoking out to the balcony, if I feel the urge. I think I am a considerate smoker and will follow the rules. I think the casino on all ships seems to be the problem area. It just doesn't get the open air needed. But, this is our sixth cruise, and I have found most people to be considerate.

I like the idea of the fabreeze. I shall bring some, but I assure whoever is behind us, I do not smoke in the cabin ever.

And, I have a friend I met on the boards and I am so anxious to meet her. She has respitory problems, so I bet I will smoke alot less being around her.

I'm a smoker and I can't stand the smell of stale smoke and I would difinately notice if there was a smoke smell when we first entered the cabin. I also can't sit next to a smoker in close quarters and in turn don't light up myself. It has never been a problem on Celebrity. The only complaints I've heard on board is when a non smoker decides to sit in the smoking section and you can certainly avoid doing that. :)

Randy is right. You could encounter a problem on any ship, any line, unless it was a designated non smoking ship.

Thanks for the input! I definately feel better. As I said, the Millenium was not that bad in the public areas. For the record, I understand that smokers have rights too and would never suggest they stop doing what they have to do if it is allowed. I do hope though that it does not prevent us from also enjoying our veranda. I sailed on RCCL in Alaska and both neighbors smoked on their balcony. We did have to go inside and close the doors because the smoke came back into our cabin. It all worked out though because we simply waited until they were done. They did not sit out there for hours!

I'm glad it worked out, and it should be fine on your upcoming cruise.

I'll admit to being a smoker, though not cigarettes, but cigars. I enjoy lighting up on the balcony and watching the world go by. However, I try and use as much courtesy as possible. If a neighbor is already outside, I would not light up, and waited until they went back in. Also, I tried to pick times when people would likely be busy doing something else.. either on shore, very early morning (neighbors still asleep), or really LATE (early) like after 1:00 am...

Hopefully I didnt cause any problems for my cruising neighbors. If I did, I would hope they would approach me about it, so things could be worked out amicably.
