Avril Posted June 8, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 8, 2008 I've heard that HAL puts a hole in the card of those who are underage (under 21). The problem with this for me is that I do look very young. :( When I 1st get on a ship, I normaly go straight to the Purser's Desk to get a hole punched in my card so I can put a lanyard through it and wear it around my neck so I don't lose it. :D If they mark the cards with a hole if you're underage, and I get one punched for a lanyard, I'm going to have a terrible time at the bars getting a drink as because I look so young (I'm 23 but look about 15) they're not going to believe me that the hole was not punched by the cruise line because I'm underage. :( Is there a certian place on the card that hey put the underage hole? I'll have to be sure to put my lanyard hole in a different place.
sk8teacher Posted June 8, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 8, 2008 Not being young enough to worry about it :D I really don't know how they identify those under 21. But a solution would be to go to your local office supply store and purchase a pre-punched ID holder. They are less than $2 and should last for several cruises. Cheers,
Lucyt1207 Posted June 8, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 8, 2008 We just returned from cruise/tour of Alaska. My son is 18 and nothing was punched on his card. When he went in to the casino he was asked for proof that he was 18. I guess if he had gone to a bar they would have asked that he show ID to prove that he is 21. jackkip Posted June 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 8, 2008 Last year on the Oosterdam, my DD who is 15 didn't have her card punched.
mamaofami Posted June 8, 2008 #5 Share Posted June 8, 2008 When I was in my 20's, I looked very young, SInce I didn't drink a lot, I only had this problem the few times I did and was asked for proof of age. Now that I'm a senior, when I go to the movies, they don't even ask for proof of age. I wish they would! LOL :D
6rugrats Posted June 8, 2008 #6 Share Posted June 8, 2008 You are worrying about nothing. The crew can tell by your card how old you are. You will not have a problem buying a drink if you are over 21. It had nothing to do with a punched hole.

jtl513 Posted June 9, 2008 #8 Share Posted June 9, 2008 But a solution would be to go to your local office supply store and purchase a pre-punched ID holder.Be sure to get one that really holds the card securely. My DW's key-card blew out of one somewhere on Grand Turk. (She had no trouble getting back on board and going to the front desk for a new one. It might have been a little different if she did not 3 people to vouch for her, though!)
jmbaker65 Posted June 9, 2008 #9 Share Posted June 9, 2008 For our cruise back in March they clipped off one of the corners for my minor children. That is how they identify them quickly.
soupbones wife Posted June 9, 2008 #10 Share Posted June 9, 2008 Can't speak for HAL as we cruise next month the first time, but on Celebrity our youngest son was 20 1/2 a few years back and he was allowed to drink beer and wine only after we signed an okay on a form and I do think he had a punched or different looking card. His older brothers who were of age were allowed to buy buckets of beers, but he was only allowed to buy one at a time. This probably doesn't help answer you but thought I'd chime in!! Sounds like HAL may be totally different.

We were on the Zenith in 2005 when I was under age (I think I was 20) and my Mom had to sign a form to say I could drink beer and wine (which was kinda strange for us since where we live, the drinking age is 19). Also, I had a blue cruise card and everyone else's was white.
