Does anyone know a good reasonably priced place for lunch that has some island type food for the adults, but still has burgers, etc for kids? We usually eat at a small place called Conch Fritters. It is directly across the street from the British Colonial hotel. After exiting the ship and the Welcome Center, walk straight ahead to Bay Street. Turn right and walk all the way to the hotel which sits at a bend in the road. Cross Bay Street, and the restaurant will be facing the entrance to the hotel (it is only about a 10 minute walk). Some of our favorites are: conch salad, conch fritters, grouper sandwich, conch chowder. They also have burgers & fries.

(We just did this cruise in April ) so we went back to the ship for lunch, freshened up and back out for more fun.... Why spend the cash when you dont have to. Does anyone know a good reasonably priced place for lunch that has some island type food for the adults, but still has burgers, etc for kids? I have always returned to the ship for lunch. First of all, I am not so sure what they would be feeding me on some of those islands and second I have already paid for lunch on the ship when I bought my cruise. I am probably missing out on a lot of wonderful food but then I figure I am also missing out on possibly getting sick from mishandling the island food. Actually, the food in the Bahamas is quite good and very safe. We have been there many times on cruises as well as land based vacations, and have never gotten sick from the food or the water. ;) Another good tip is to ask the crew where they eat when in port. They often know the best spots.
HollandA Posted June 23, 2008 #6 Share Posted June 23, 2008 I've never had anything bad served to me in the Caribbean, having eaten on-shore in Nassau, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas.
Macfans Posted June 23, 2008 #7 Share Posted June 23, 2008 Senior Frogs! Go off the ship and go right and go to the end. They open at 11 AM. Get there before 11 because it fills up quick.:D

I don't think we island people will try to poison you.;) Actually, you are missing out on some great Bahamian food. To the OP, I don't live in Nassau but I do live on one of the other Bahamian islands. I have been to Conch Fritters before however, and the food was fine. Enjoy, where ever you decide to dine.
PH8 Posted June 23, 2008 #9 Share Posted June 23, 2008 We have eaten at Conch Fritters a couple of times........Twin Brothers twice and the Greek restaurant on Bay Street(that as my favorite) I dont consider Senor Frogs a good place to eat.......one goes there to drink....... I also say get off the ship and eat........
AF-1 Posted June 23, 2008 #10 Share Posted June 23, 2008 Conch Fritters gets my vote. It's a five minute walk once off the ship. Its directly accross the street from the Hilton Hotel, which is called the British Colonial Hilton. Senior Frogs is not for kids; too much drinking and partying. tigerdadky Posted June 24, 2008 #11 Share Posted June 24, 2008 There was a restaurant right off the main drag called the bohemain cafe i think and it had great conch fritters. There was a peddler giving out coupons for it and we tried it and it was great. Liked the fritters but not the fried conch. Id stick with the fritters. lablvr2 Posted June 24, 2008 #12 Share Posted June 24, 2008 Call me the odd passenger out here but I have never, in 10 cruises consumed off the ship. Too many warnings about the port's food. Won't do it. I would never buy lunch when it is provided on the ship. Knock on wood!

Won't do it. I would never buy lunch when it is provided on the ship. Knock on wood! Wow, I feel sad for you. I think one of the greatest things you can do when traveling is to sample other cultures drink and food. To the OP- all you need to do is walk across the main street in front of the straw market and get on the number 10 bus. It will cost you 1 dollar each. Tell the driver to let you off at the fish fry ( 5 minute bus ride). At this location you have about 10 different restaurants to choose from, all local cuisine. I prefer Goldies King of Conch but have eatin at several others and they all were good. I will say for about 7 dollars each you can eat until you are stuffed. When done simply walk to where the bus let you off and within seconds another number 10 bus will come and take you back to the straw market. Completely simple, safe and highly recommended by anyone who knows anything about Nassau.
HollandA Posted June 24, 2008 #15 Share Posted June 24, 2008 I would be very sad if I hadn't tried a couple of restaurants in the ports we visited! I can't recall the name of the restaurant we ate at in Nassau (my parents were with us and it was a place they had been to before - on Paradise Island near Atlantis), but it was phenomenal. We also tried The Greenhouse in St. Maarten on a whim (we were hungry after finishing the America's Cup regatta, and it was near the marina where they let us off), and there was this great cafe we stumbled upon in St. Thomas that had terrific soups and salads (we knew we'd picked the right place when it was packed with cruise ship employees - the ladies at the table next to us worked on the Explorer in Adventure Ocean and we had a great time talking with them). flcouple Posted June 24, 2008 Author #19 Share Posted June 24, 2008 Sounds like a fun place. We like to try the local flavors every where we go. That is part of the fun, but we also have young children on this trip which is why we were looking for island tastes that also cater to kids. My wife and I tried Skands on Bay Street and really liked it. It is simple, but the food is good. I also really like Gombay punch (local soda) and they serve it at Skands. But they don't have much for kids. We were also trying to avoid the tourist traps at the same time. A tall order, but I bet we can find places. Thanks again for all the help! Wow, I feel sad for you. I am confident they have a kids menu at all the restaurants described at the fish fry. Anyways if you want a place the kids might like, stay on the bus for 4 more minutes and get off at cable beach. There is several restuarants but the one I am thinking of is called Johnnie Canoes. Not sure how old your kids are but I think the atmosphere caters to all families. Plus the beach area is one of the best at this location. A casino is also located in one of the hotels.
temple1 Posted June 24, 2008 #23 Share Posted June 24, 2008 We've vacationed in Nassau, Cable Beach and Paradise Island several times. If you want to go as far out as Cable Beach = Cafe Johnny Canoe is a good choice - outside dining. I saw something on a website recently saying it is now closed. We had breakfast in Nassau one day I think it was at Cafe Skans - the best homemade corned beef hash. On one of our first trips we ate lunch at Travellers Rest, but I've heard it has changed and become much more touristy. We dined at the Humidor a couple of years ago. OMG! My introduction to the Brazilian Steakhouse. It was wonderful.
