Istanbul on Sunday

Recommended Posts

The major sites are all open on Sundays.

In terms of the Grand Bazaar, we were last there in 2007 on a Saturday and a Sunday. The Sunday we were there it was open for the first time in many years. Normally we were told it was closed but they opened that day sort of as a test. We understand that some of the shops were not for the opening so that they could have a day off. So, I am not sure whether or not that is open on a Sunday.

But the historical sites are open.

Topkapi Palace is closed on Tuesdays. We were just there last week. Aya Sofia is closed Mondays.

The Palace is open from 9-5 and is 10 lira. They won't take Euros or dollars. We used our credit card. The Harem is also 10YTL and worth it. We got an audio tour that covered both the Palace and Harem. They weren't doing guided tours of the Harem and there was no line. We spent 4 hours total there and would have spent more had it not been for a torrential downpour, thunder and lightning.

Makes sure you go to the Treasury building to see the dagger, the 86 carat diamond and the diamond crusted chain mail.
