I have given up on the Sky.

I wonder if CDC even knows about the problems. If they inspected the ship in May, then she probably won't be due for another inspection for 6-9 months.

But I do agree, that I would be surprised if CDC would allow the ship to sail with non functioning toilets and flooding toilets. (can we say mold.....)

I wonder if CDC even knows of these problems. Is there a way to make a report to CDC and ask them to investigate??

The CDC inspection was done 12/21/2007 it was posted on CC 5/31/2008.

The CDC boards and inspects ships with no prior notice. They then rank the ship and post the report at their website. I have been advised to check the ranking for any ship I am looking to sail on. If you do go the the CDC site and check their Green Sheet you will find that a ranking of 78 is almost unheard of. Most ships are scored in the high 90's and even 100. I am not picking on Sky - only getting the info out there. Purchasing a cruise, is after all, a purchase of choice. I just feel that NCL has not been totally open and up front about Sky and as a consumer, it concerns me. Sorry if this offends or upsets people. It upset and concerned me, to be sure. I am faced with a cancelled trip and probably lots of red tape to get reimbursed. While I have saved my long anticipated and well earned vacation by rebooking on another cruise line I felt the need to take my time to share what I had found so that others considering a cruise on Sky would have all the info out there to make their decision.

Bottom line, if NCL's customer service was doing a good job, many of these concerns would have been calmed and quieted with our phonecalls to them. No such luck. I feel strongly that ANY cruise line must pay attention to the product they are selling and the feedback. 10% may not seem like much in the way of "bad" reviews here, but I think it should really be concerning to NCL. I also think they owe an explananation about their unsatisfactory CDC score.

As a consumer, we deserve more than what NCL has been willing to give in the way of assurance that all is well on Sky. Personally, my vacations are too few and far between to take a chance. There are many choices that have almost NO negative reviews rather than the opposite. I can ignore a bad review here and there, but when they are 90% bad and the research supports the problems I am just not willing to take the risk.

For those of you who have chosen to stick with it on Sky, I hope that your trip is in the 90% positive and memorable for all the right reasons.

you are right: a score in the 70s is almost unheard of, not to many score 100 either, I just checked for the past year: I would say and i am not going to take time to average this out or count the scores, most fall into the low to mid 90s range.

Wellseasoned, thanks for the CDC information, I really didn't know how it works. But I have another question: is there a more recent inspection, and if so, how did it go?

I don't question your concerns and reasons for canceling your cruise, it is your vacation! And I don't think anyone will question your concerns over NCL customer service, either. But, you mention the "90% bad" reviews.... it could be that bad, or not, I'm 100% sure that the negatives will be posted before the positives!l

I think NCL is trying to fix this problem, and will. How long it takes, and how well, remains to be seen, but I don't doubt for a minute they are working hard.

Those issues were fixed months before that cc article was posted. Several big heads on the ship rolled and the issues were solved.

gee i hope they dont have a surprise visit by the CDC now they may not be far off that 78 with S%^& flowing out of the toilets and the halls smelling like sewers. Maybe more "big heads" need to roll to get things where they need to be. Listen folks, you can try to justify it anyway you want to..."its only a small number of cabins", "they are working to fix the problems"...bla bla bla...bottom line is that this multibillion dollar company had this ship in drydock for 6 wks and they were prompt to build a beautiful casino but they couldnt fix the plumbing and ac issues in a month and a half!! that is total BS and is inexcusable. NCL knew good and well the issues on this ship. Everyone knows this is not a new problem. This would have been the perfect time to take care of the problem once and for all. But since they are trying to sell the ship, hell, why spend the money. We'll give the morons a 50 dollar OBC and we'll keep on keeping on! There are other cruising options, they are not the only game in town. Why would you chance your vacation. Its no big deal until youre one of the ones affected. NCL should realize that word of this spreads. A good friend of mine works at the NCL headquarters here in Miami and after i came back from the first 4 day voyage a couple weeks ago he told me everybody at work was talking about the major problems onboard. This was immediately after that first cruise. So why the hell did it take all this uproar for them to start taking action if they were well aware of the issues since the first sailing?

  • 3 years later...

Just returned home from our 3rd Cruise. This time we got, what we at first thought was a great deal, for the Norwegian Sky. Unfortunately, this ship was a very bad experience for us.

Starting with the confiscation of our alcohol, which we each had a brand new 32oz Traveller (http://www.rumrunnerflasks.com) in our carry-on. Apparently they use Airport grade security scanners. Instead of taking us to a semi-private area to go though our carry-on, the security staff took us to a table in plain view of the public going though security, searched our carry-on, found the Travellers and then proceeded to attempt to embarrass us by holding up the Flasks and bragging loudly to their co-workers "Hey, look what I found!" While waiting in line for check-in, we decided not to spend a single penny aboard this ship.

Finally we got onto the ship and head to our stateroom. Upon entering the stateroom, we immediately noticed that the room was nowhere near what was shown on Norwegian's Web-site. Both the picture of the room and the floor plan shown on the web-site for our fare class, did not come anywhere close to the actual stateroom we received. There was a mildew and urine smell in the bathroom and the stateroom also had a musty mildew odour.

After putting our stuff in the stateroom, we went to the Garden Café for lunch, where we were again disappointed by the lack of variety. Hamburgers and Nocho chips 3 times a day for 4 days was getting really boring.

After lunch we took a self tour of the ship. For dinner we went to the Crossings dining room. As a person who is not fond of cheese and sauces, I found the menu to be very limited. The wait staff seemed like they were just there to do a job and get you out the door. Unlike the fun environment we have experienced on other cruises.

Now it's time for the evening show in the Stardust Theatre, upon walking into the theatre, you notice the very strong smell of musty mildew and mould. We take our seats underneath the sound booth area, and look up to find black mould everywhere. We stayed to enjoy the show, but I sure wish we hadn't.

Time for sleep, we head to the stateroom for the night. I found the room to be very dry and woke up with a sore throat. Each night got worse, as I am an asthmatic, allergic to dust, mould and pollens. By day 5, both my spouse and myself were very sick.

The next evening we received a notice insisting that we go to guest services to open our on board spending account. So, I went and insisted that I was not giving them either my credit card or cash. And kindly asked them to remove the service charges as we would give tips to those we thought deserved them.

Come debarkation day, the account statement arrived at our stateroom door, and I again went down to Guest Services to have the service charges removed and after a lengthy conversation, and completing some forms, they finally did. Now we proceed to leave the ship, but are stopped at check-out and asked to return to guest services to settle our accounts. I explained that we just came from guest services and that the accounts should have already been settled. They insisted that we return, so I advised them that by not letting us leave the ship, they were illegally withholding us. They than called down to guest services and 5 mins later we were told we were cleared to leave.

In all, we loved the Bahamas and the islands were great, but we just wished we had stuck with Carnival as we had great experiences with them on our 2 previous cruises.

Hmmm, 32 oz each of alcohol per person was confiscated along with brand new flasks designed to elude security. assuming that's hard liquor, to me, that is a lot of booze to attempt to smuggle for a four day cruise...opinions vary. People accustomed to drinking that much who suddenly abstain often feel really lousy in the ensuing days.

Anyway, in attempting to smuggle, you exposed yourself to the embarrassment, the inconvenience and the cost if detected. And detected you were. You seem to have been unhappy from that moment on...Since you then decided not to spend a dime and did not put down cash or a card, it seems obvious that you had already decided not to be happy and not to pay the daily service charge...It is too bad you had a poor time...Enjoy your fun ship cruises in the future.

I am amazed at the low standards that people are willing to vacation with. Wow. People's concerns here are VALID when it comes this ship's cleanliness!

We always bring the disinfection spray anyway, just to feel better.

Hopefully they weren't wearing the "Rum Runners" t-shirts they also sell on their site to board.

Anyway, I had to quote the above because it's just so perfect. Folks who like to drink to have a good time stubbornly forcing themselves to be sober does not a make for a happy cruise. Of course the things that they would have blown off or not even noticed had they been happy, like some alleged mold, would now become pronounced. At least they didn't complain about seeing the same "pink elephant" towel animals every night when they returned to their room.

You were attempting to sneak on items that you clearly knew were prohibited and you feel the need to complain? You gambled and lost.

This is when you should have called housekeeping or gone to guest services and had the problem taken care of.

After putting our stuff in the stateroom, we went to the Garden Café for lunch, where we were again disappointed by the lack of variety. Hamburgers and Nocho chips 3 times a day for 4 days was getting really boring.

You have breathing issues and did not change your seat??

Why in the world would you not have these issues addressed before they became a problem for you?

Thanks for the good laugh this morning! :D

You got caught doing something you knew was against the rules (why else would you be packing in rum runners?) and then you let it ruin your vacation. And then you took it out on NCL by refusing to spend a dime on board and stiffing the staff. I'm sure NCL is sorry to see you go.

WOW!!!!!! Can't believe how NCL have allowed the lovely Sky to deteriorate in only 10 months ( when we were aboard her )

I think I'm inclined to agree with others who said you were perhaps determined to find fault after your alcohol was confiscated! Only my humble opinion, but hey!!

Can someone be honest with me regarding the condition of the Sky? I am treating my sister to a vacation and am concerned I did not make a good choice.

First cruise for us (in our 60's) and reading about urine, mold, and "problems" concern me. Also the fact that we are in a balcony in the forward part of the ship and possible sea sickness adds concern to my selection of vacation posibilities.

We are booked for room 208 on the 10th floor. Anyone know of issues with this room?

I greatly appreciate any information you can provide. We are sailing this month and it is too late to change plans.

Thank you.

Thank you.

My last 2 NCL cruises have been on the newest NCL ship Epic and oldest Sky. And I have done Sky twice, one time in suite, the other time in a balcony cabin.

Both cruises were a great time. Actually the 4 night cruise is probably my all time favorite cruise ever (first time in a suite and the best excursions ever).

Here are some facts on the Sky. When the Sky debuted in 1999 she was for a short time the largest cruise ship in the world. She sailed Hawaii quite a bit before coming back to Miami.

The Sky is the oldest NCL ship BUT the youngest cruise ship of all lines to sail to the Bahamas

The Sky has been updated TWICE already

I think the Sky gets a bad rep because of how busy she is. She works twice as hard as any other ship with 2 cruises every week. So she carries over 4000 passengers back and forth in one week.

The Sky is a great bargain. You can sail the Sky for less than an ocean front hotel on Miami beach and remember the hotel would not cover your meal expenses or entertainment. The drinnks would be more expensive at the hotel too.

The Sky has no courtyard and one is not needed since there are no sea days and everyday is in a different port. The suites are priced right and the owners suite has a giant 8 person hot tub right on the balcony.

No she does not have the bells and whistles of the Pearl or Epic but on such a short cruise with no sea days, you dont need them.

As far as sea sickness and boat rocking in the forward part of the ship, I would not worry on the Sky. The Bahamas are so close to Miami that the ship must travel at a very slow speed to get there. It was the most calm ship I have ever been on.

david_sobe: Thank you so very much for your quick reply and insight. I think I made the right choice. I am not sure she would like a cruise. This will be a "test".:)

My husband did not think he would like cruising. finally, he agreed to try a four day cruise with the understanding that if he did not like it I would stop asking. the weather was awful. We had high winds and high seas. we missed a port due to weather, spending a day at sea. nevertheless, we both had a great time. Neither of us got seasick. we liked the sea day. We appreciated the excellent service. As mentioned, we spent less for the cruise than for hotels. at the time, the ship (NCL Sea, no longer in NVL fleet) was smaller and older than others in the fleet and offer fewer amenities than any current NCL ship. Some people complained...we were happy and puzzled by the complaints. We shrugged off other people's dissatisfaction, and I hope you will, too. that the wether was poor and the ship older only convinced us more than cruising was for us. DH, the reluctant cruiser, has now taken 30 some cruises:D. as you can tell, I have fond memories of our "test" cruise....I hope yours turns out well, too.

Read some new reviews of this ship. Don't forget most of this thread was written a few years ago.

I am not worried about reviews! Had I listened to the reviews about the Star, I would have missed out on my trip of a lifetime! :)
