Age Restrictions

My 19 yr. old daughter and friends are looking into a cruise for Spring break next year(they will be 20 then). Can anyone point me to a site that lists which cruises would allow 20 yr. olds to book a room? I've checked some of the cruise web sites but I am not finding age restrictions listed anywhere. Thanks.

Your'e going to run into age restrictions as MOST CRUISELINES DO NOT ALLOW PASSENGERS UNDER 21 years of age UNLESS accompanied in the same cabin with legal parent or guardian 25 years or older or legally married.

I agree with the previous response. Brenda, please post what ship they book on as I certainly want to avoid that cruise like the plague. Cruise lines (yes Carnival) were given bad reps because of out of control Young Adults pulling fire alarms, knocking on cabin doors, and even getting drunk and "taken advantage of by others". Are you sure you want to send these young girls off on their own for this type of experience without a chaperone?

After looking at a Princess Brochure.....

YES, passengers 18 years or older ARE ALLOWED to book their stateroom w/out a parent or legal guardian in the stateroom !!!

 

So, you may have a great surprise for the girls and some great ships to choose from !!

 

But as one poster said....make sure the girls are mature and responsible enough

 

But on the flip side of that posters comments, I have seen PLENTY of OLDER ADULTS that have caused quite a scene onboard ships after a few drinks !

Aren't people over 18 considered adults in the eyes of the government? They can serve in the milatary and defend this country but don't let the same age group on a cruise ship. That makes sense.

Every time I see one of these posts about Age Restrictions, or young people in their own cabins, and all of the negative responses, it makes me ashamed to be an adult. I’m 45 and thank god I haven’t forgotten what it’s like to be young.

 

I agree with the earlier post. If you’re old enough to vote and defend your country, you’re old enough to take a cruise or have an adult beverage.

 

I’ve been on fourteen cruises and in my experience obnoxious adults and seniors have out numbered obnoxious children, teenagers, and young adults 4 to 1.

 

I can’t tell you how many rude old people I’ve seen cutting in line, hogging pool chairs, or holding rows of seats in the theaters. Not to mention smoking in your face, or falling down drunk.

 

Give me a ship full of young adults anytime!

D10000: 18-year olds may be considered adults by the US government, but RCI isn't run by the government. It is a private company that can place any age restrictions that it wants. I would imagine that these restrictions were put in place based on (bad) experiences, not on a whim. I am not saying all 18-year olds are not mature enough to cruise alone. RCI has decided that those who are not mature outnumber those who are and has placed restrictions accordingly.

 

If you've never lived in a college town, you have never known the "joys" of having thousands of 18-year olds away from home for the first time. Are they all bad? No. However, the police costs, property damage, rudeness, drunken parties, and angry neighbors are significant. And the unruly, uncaring students do make it harder for the majority who are hard-working and a pleasure to be around.

 

BTW: 18-year olds still can't legally consume alcohol in the US, but they can have beer and wine on RCI cruises--so there's a little irony for you.

Yes........and no. At 18, you'll have a tough time getting a drink, renting a car or apparently booking a cruise vacation on some cruise lines.

 

You can, on the other hand, get married, have children, watch XXX rated movies, fight and die for you country and operate an automobile.

 

We have some rather odd laws and rules don't we?

 

What lucky girls to have someone to help them plan what is likely to be one of the best experiences of their lives to date. I hope they have a wonderful trip.

In the US people between 18 and 21 are in a state of inbetween. Yes, for SOME things they are considered adult. For others they are still minors.

Another group of people in the inbetween are the 55-62-65 year olds. They are old enough for AARP and SOME senior discounts. They are too young for full social security and other senior discounts. We seem to slide people gradually into different age groups.

The cruise lines are just setting their policies. Some feel the need to protect themselves from the reputation of being party boats for teenagers.

After seeing what out of control large groups of teens on spring break can do - I am glad that I won't be dealing with it if I chose to cruise.

 

Work like a dog. Live like a pauper. Save all your money. Then Cruise!

I had this same problem 2 years ago when my daughter was 20 and wanted to cruise with her friends that were 21, 22 and 23. At that time I was able to book them on the Norway because NCL did not have the age restriction. I would assume you could still book with them. It turned out to be quite a cruise because they were upgraded to an Owner's Suite! She will never cruise with us again because now she is spoiled! I hope this helps!

Wow! Thanks for the great information. I forgot about the Windjammer Cruises. They'd probably love it. I'll pass the info on to my daughter and her friends. I'm also in the process of planning a family cruise for my son's graduation next year. He's bringing 2 friends along. So I guess that makes him a spoiled brat,too! Even though they might be over 18 to book a cruise, they might not be allowed to drink alcholic beverage and go in the casino. On RCCL and Celebrity you have to only be 18 years of age. But I think on other lines it is 21. If they plan on doing any of the above you will have to check into that policy. The young kids like to stay out at night and they might find themselves with not much to do. Our last cruise you had to be in your state room by 11:00 if you were under age. They had security checking. They punch holes in your sea pass if you are under 18.

Also, as a college kid on a budget, I really can't afford to drink on the ship. Off the ship is another matter altogether, but that's a story for another time.

My son and his friends are big "Texas Hold em" players so they are really excited about trying the casinos. Of course, I'm going to budget their money for them so they don't get too carried away.

We must be lucky or just a lot of fun , because our kids like hanging out with us on the cruises. We go to the shows, the comedians, the Karoake, trivia,& dancing. We try to participate in all of the games on board. The Quest is our favorite. We have a great time.

Ahhh, if only I was this organized with my classes... life would be so much easier.

 

I don't know how much you know about ship's casinos, but they are more of a money pit than land-based casinos are, and they don't have the variety of games that you find in a casino here. There is no player poker in a cruise ship casino. The reasons for this are fairly simple, as poker takes up lots of room, and there is almost no money made by the house on poker. The ships do feature Caribbean Stud poker (which I love), and video poker, but that is the closest that you will get.

 

I own a travel set of 300 chips that I bought on Ebay last year before poker mania set in, and I took that on my last cruise. I played in my room, and in the card room, with people that travelled with me, as well as people I met on the ship. I had a great time, and won a LOT of money (I play very regularly, like 3 or 4 times a week), and the people that I was with did too. The broadcast of hold'em on TV had helped the game grow exponentially in popularity.

 

The last time that I went on a cruise with my parents, I spent a lot of time with them. Part of that is becuase I never see them anymore, and part is because they know how to party !! We did all kinds of things, and my mom and I won the Karaoke Idol contest with a great cover of the Mariah Carey/Boys2Men song one sweet day. We cleaned up in the trivia competitions too.

 

Be sure to encourage your guy and his friends to enter the Men's sexy legs contest on one of the sea days. They are LOTS of fun, especially after a couple of buckets of Corona!

Thanks once again for some great advice. My son has 2 sets of poker chips that he got on ebay. They started playing about 2 yrs. ago. I'll definitely tell him to bring them along and play in the card room. I'm not much of a gambler myself (Nickel slots). My husbands likes Craps and 3-card. He usually does okay, but we do know that the cruise casinos are not the best place to win money.

Congrats on the Karaoke win. I think that competition is some of the best and funniest entertainment on the ship.

As for the sexy legs contest...my son is 6'1" and 120 lbs. He could definitely win the skinniest legs contest!
