LEESRE Posted November 16, 2008 #4 Share Posted November 16, 2008 If you don't wish to take it with you you can always buy it through your cabin steward and it is quite cheap to buy. Also all of the mixers are for sale also, you pay for 9 and they give you 12.

Ltr bottle of Gordens Gin £10.00. :):)Happy Cruising (Hic!!):):) Dai
NSWP Posted November 17, 2008 #6 Share Posted November 17, 2008 Strange that policy, P&O UK allowing any alcohol to be brought on board. P&O Australia allow no alcohol to be brought on board, very strict and they conduct searches for it. Must think us colonials are Alcos.!
LibraLass41 Posted November 17, 2008 #7 Share Posted November 17, 2008 I tend to agree with spirits, hardly worth while carrying it on, it can be bought on board for around £10-15 a litre same as home, but wine is worth the effort. I take a 3litre box of good wine (with tap) which costs around £16 a box and I get 16 glasses from that over a 2 week cruise - we drink in between us on the balcony, just a glass a day in the late afternoon, and keep it in the fridge. It is easy to transport and unbreakable , small and compact, with equivalent wine around £4 a glass onboard - and having to wait for room service to attend, that, I reckon is worthwhile doing... If the cap fits:D:D:D As far as I can see P&O (UK) is the only line to do this, although they have a policy of no alchol being brought on board and will enforce it if you are clearly not in a condition to drink any more. ie you are *********** (insert your own word for legless) :)Happy Cruising(Hic):) Dai
kazover40 Posted November 17, 2008 #9 Share Posted November 17, 2008 When cruising the med we love to buy 1 or 2 good bottles of quality local wines in Spain/France/Italy which would cost the earth if available on board. Don't even mind paying the corkage:D We also take a wine box to drink in our cabin. Usually M & S Pinot Gregio, a pleasant anytime drinking wine at around £16. CASPALL Posted November 17, 2008 #10 Share Posted November 17, 2008 Kenny You will probably want to bring your own whisky on board as P&O do not have a good selection of whisky on sale at a special price. We always bring champagne on board and then we might buy wine at the first port of call. We also find that the mixers work out quite expensive (just because we go through so many of them!?!) so once we're in Madeira we will be heading for the supermarket to buy cans or bottles of tonic - also mineral water. Try to spot us on the quayside - the couple with longer arms than anyone else! Caryl
digger-deano Posted January 4, 2009 #11 Share Posted January 4, 2009 Hi Libralass, I'm a newbie with this cruise malarkey. I'm getting married on Ventura on the 7th of March. Re the box of wine, what is the size and how do you pack it? Thanks, Dean
britsbest Posted January 4, 2009 #12 Share Posted January 4, 2009 Correct me if I am wrong (It has been known!) but the Ventura is in the Caribbean then? You will not be allowed to take wine on in airplane cabin due to the (not so) recent legislation regarding liquids- and would you risk it in your suitcase??? I believe these posters are boarding at Southampton where these security matters are not a concern.

Re the box of wine, what is the size and how do you pack it? Thanks, Dean Hi Dean, I think taking boxes of wine is definitely a Southampton cruise 'thing'. You would take up far too much of your allowence for baggage. You can buy booze in the Caribbean, not sure how cheap wine is however. :):)Happy Cruising:):) Dai
LibraLass41 Posted January 4, 2009 #14 Share Posted January 4, 2009 Hi Yes, this is one of the advantages of sailing from Southampton - as much luggage as you want, I take a wine box (3LITRE) Sorry no good to you if fly-cruising.
bongaree Posted January 5, 2009 #15 Share Posted January 5, 2009 Hi Les I agree with you. I don't know why P&O Australia have such a problem with us Aussies taking our grog on board. We had a bottle of Johnny Walker and one of Bundy confiscated on the Pac. Sun earlier this year. We are cruising Southampton to Sydney in August on Dawn Princess and wonder if we will be able to take spirits on. P&O Aust. used to allow one bottle per passenger. Don't know why they changed it. On the Sun they served obviously intoxiated people at every bar and especially in the casino. We only wanted to have a drink in our cabin while dressing for dinner and always have quite a hefty bill at the end of each cruise. Hic. Pontius Navigator Posted January 5, 2009 #16 Share Posted January 5, 2009 We brought 6 bottles of Maderia on board in you know where, no problems. On our last cruise we were offered a cabin wine pack, like the mixer pack. Buy 6 small cans and get the 7th free. It was £17.30 (I think) for 7 or £2.47 less any Portunus discount each. Like mixers it must be all of a kind, ie 12 Tonics or 7 Chardonay which reminds me, we had to explain to our steward that Canada Dry was not Schwepps Tonic. bellaj Posted January 6, 2009 #17 Share Posted January 6, 2009 Hi - we are sailing out of Southampton on Vetura in Oct (her repositioning) so are interested in this discussion! I would ask the question again however, of how do you take it on board ? Packed in luggage or just taken on in a carrier bag ? Not sure I could stand the humilation of having my M&S carrier bag with my wine box confiscated from me on embarkation  Or can we just be brazen ? Any thoughts? Vampire Parrot Posted January 6, 2009 #18 Share Posted January 6, 2009 Don't pack a wine box or anything delicate in your checked-in luggage! When luggage is loaded onto a ship, it can be stacked 6 or 8 cases high (maybe with your case at the bottom), and the folks handling your luggage aren't gentle with it. I usually take a few bottles of wine or a wine-box on a P&O ship if I'm embarking at Southampton, and have never had any problems. VP

Pontius Navigator Posted January 6, 2009 #20 Share Posted January 6, 2009 Hi - we are sailing out of Southampton . . . how do you take it on board ? . . . or just taken on in a carrier bag ? I would suggest you pack your carry on in a decent bag or case and not a carrier bag. You can take as much carry on as you can carry and it will be security scanned before you board. However you may have quite some distance to walk along various corridors, companion ways, gang planks, negotiate lifts and generally have to lug it around for a couple of hours if you board at 12 and cabins are not available until 2. I take a rucksack.
Mounty Posted January 7, 2009 #21 Share Posted January 7, 2009 Whilst on a twelve week cruise on Artemise over last winter cabin service even brought us a bucket of ice and plate of lemon slices every evening to go with our 'own' duty free gin. Doesn't really get any better than that now does it!?
LibraLass41 Posted January 7, 2009 #22 Share Posted January 7, 2009 I take my booze on in a weekender case on wheels, no hand luggage size restriction on a cruise, so why struggle LOL:) I did do a silly thing on this years 16nighter to Venice, at last minute slipped a few tinnies of beer in my 'odds and sods' case (which had my evening bags , binoculars etc in....) when the cases were delivered the cabin smelt like a brewery...oops one tin pierced and leaked in case - so I would confirm NEVER EVER pack booze with your clothes or any luggage going into the ship, always hand luggage. We were eaning over our balcony watching the handlers THROW the cases onto the conveyor belt on Ventura in September, - they did not 'handle with care'. Pontius Navigator Posted January 7, 2009 #23 Share Posted January 7, 2009 LibraLass, ever thought of maple syrup. The suitcase was eventually useable after about 12 years. However my bestest suitcase ever, and I still have it 40 years later, was a cheap one from Woolies, bless their socks. Cost about a pound or less and early on in its life it was liberally drenched in hydraulic oil. Hydraulic oil is one on the most corrosive substances that you can get. It blistered the paper cover on the case and let not a drop into the case. Strong and lightweight too. I had another Woolies case, expandable fasteners, remember them. Expensive, 25/-. I used to pack it with cabbages, cauliflowers, oranges etc (don't ask). Brilliant.
BigAl51 Posted January 25, 2009 #24 Share Posted January 25, 2009 Hi Cruising newbie here! Taking a Baltic Cruise on Oriana in July. Like LibraLass41 I enjoy a beer and may well take a few cans in a weekender case on wheels (good tip). I also like a nice pint in the bar. Anyone know what beers are stocked or can give any indication of prices? Thanks in advance.
