What are the best things to do there? We want to go to the "fishing village". We really want to get the "local" feel.

If you are referring to Majahual (or Mahahual) walk through the "tourism village" and find an exit onto the street. Find the taxis, find the guy in charge of the taxis and pay $3 USD each for the trip to Mahahual. They don't want pesos, so will offer you a very unfavorable rate -- they really DO want USD.

You will get dropped off at a taxi stop, from where you can see the beach and malecon. The beach is lovely, the restaurants provide tables & chairs with an expectation that you will purchase some food & beverages.

The street behind the malecon and the malecon shops is much more authentic.

There were kayaks there the day we went, but the waves were daunting, and it appeared the kayaks were not available for rent that day.

Does this help?
