HAL Visa Rewards Card ...

I was JUST going to post the same thing! Very interesting. No annual fee. Looks like it takes a lot of points to get much, but it might add up if you used it for everyday purchases.

They won't give me one. I already have a "juniper" card ... AirTran Visa Rewards. It's the same credit card company.

Reading the fine print: restrictions apply on purchases that count towards rewards.

**"1) restrictions apply and 2) items of a personal nature or optional programs or optional activities (such as alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, laundry and dry cleaning, shore excursions, medical, barber and beauty shop services) and hotel service charges are not included."

I get the part about hotel service charges not counting towards rewards....BUT why not alcohol, beauty charges, shore excursions???

What else is there?

That eliminates a lot of our onboard spending that could count towards rewards/points???

Well, can't have you actually building up points and actually getting to get any real award for using it now can we???

It's why I hate credit cards and why only a few of these "reward" type cards actually pay off in the long run. At least IMHO.

Depending on the type of purchases, I already get 1, 3 or 5 percent back in $$$$ by using my Discover or Chase cards ... that seems to be more than I would earn with the HAL card.

The only real advantages I see: (1) 5000 points for using a new HAL rewards card within 30 days of issuance, and (2) earning 2 points/$ by paying my HAL cruisefare with their card.

Also issued by the same bank. Juniper (or Barclay) also issues the Carnival Seamiles card which basically stinks IMHO. With the Princess card one can use any TA to book your cruise; with Seamiles one must use their TA (who double stinks).

Rita, that should not matter Tom and I already have the Juniper Princess Card and I just applied and was approved instantly with a credit line the same as they gave me for Princess card. Which would be enough to do 5 to 6 S Suite cruises or a whole heck of a lot of veranda cabins. I have been using my Princess card for every day purchases in the last several month including paying for the cruises and I pay in off monthly. I currently have over 16,000 points with them. Looks like I will start using this instead.:Dand put away that Princess one ;) I would love for this to appear before the end of the week so I can use it instead of my Princess card that I registered for my on board account for the Eurodam :)

I know what you mean! I had the same reaction when I read that part of the fine print. I guess onboard shopping, casino, and bingo purchases still count. Nothing else comes to mind. Such items make up a tiny portion of my account each time, so there isn't much use. Still, the double points on the cruise fare would be nice.

Otherwise, it looks like a typical %1 rebate, which is decent, not excellent, but reasonable when compared with many other rewards cards. Still, the rebate would need to be much better for me to rush out and order this card.

I already get 1% to 1.5% with other cards for general purchases (and %3 on gasoline).

Ditto. Both these cards are rated in the top 5 rewards programs.

I believe this has to do with redeeming the Valuable Rewards**, meaning that you can get a free cruise or Pinnacle Grill dinner (ie the actual cost of the cruise or dinner), but when you get that item, it doesn't include other optional charges, just the stateroom or just the dinner. For example, your dinner doesn't include wine or your stateroom wouldn't include the laundry charges. Those are optional and you'd pay for it. It doesn't mean that you can't earn points on these things. You can earn points on any Holland America purchase while onboard - just put your card on your shipboard account and charge away to get points. Hope that helps! I have my card and I'm very close to 10,000 points! I'm looking forward to spa services on my next cruise (although not quite sure yet when that will be!)
