Running track is a hard surface. If you move at a fast pace toy will want to shave the corners at the aft end of the track by moving the deck chairs in either corner. The track is about 8 1/2 lengths to a mile not the 8 posted.

Puerto Rico you could run a short loop up hll to the Fort above the ship - then to Fort Del Morro - then back.

I worked on a ship years ago going into San Juan every other week (stayed until midnight). Would do an 'out & back' long run here in the late afternoon..up the hill to the sidewalk overlooking the ocean..turned right & headed towards the Condado area with all the big hotels & casinos - ate & drank well later..!!

If you are docked in Old San Juan, turn left out of the cruise terminal and walk (or jog on cement) to the water. You'll see a large fountain with sculpture. At the water and fountain, turn right, and you will see a pedestrian walkway that goes along the water, along the bottom of the fortress wall, and to El Morro (although you'll be at the bottom of El Morro which will be perched on the hill above). I think the walkway may be asphalt and suitable for running. I'll check with my husband to see if he recalls if it is asphalt.

You won't have to put up with traffic this way. We have seen jogers using this walkway as a jogging path. We've walked it several times while in San Juan, and will be doing so again in March. I think it may be around 3-4 miles round trip from the cruise terminal, down the street, and along this walkway to El Morro and back. Old San Juan is a lovely walking city.

I think the path is on pavement for about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way, until you reach the "city gate" along the city will on the water. From there it is unpaved path. Unfortunately I don't think you can enter El Morro at the end or else that would be a nice option. Last March when we were there the unpaved portion of the path was closed due to erosion from storms. Hopefully it is fixed as this is a beautiful view and seems to me it would be much less crowded than running through the streets up to the north side of town - although if one does head that way once you get to the north side the roads and paths are much more open and their is a lot of open park area in front of El Morro and lots of wonderful views.

There is a great map and cruise info on San Juan and links to other sites with more maps and info that I found at a web site here: http://www.langland.org/cruises/sanjuan.asp The path mentioned above is located at the left (west) side of Old San Juan just along the coast where the words "Hotel El Convento" are located. be sure to look at the San Juan Guide link mentioned in the first paragraph.

You can also use Google Maps to get a good view of the area: http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&q=san+juan,+pr&ll=18.465485,-66.119971&spn=0.014756,0.016737&t=h&z=16 which shows the street you want to take to the fountain is Paseo de la Princesa

Larry: Thanks for your added information. Is the "paved" part cement or asphalt? Was the "unpaved" part crushed-chip gravel over a dirt surface? You think I would remember as we've walked it several times. I asked my dh and he doesn't remember either. We were there in late February and don't recall any erosion.

No, there is no way to get up to El Morro from there unless you scale the fortress wall (or possibly the huge boulders at the end), which I know I won't be doing! ;)

We will likely walk it again on March 1st and/or March 2nd, weather permitting. I might be able to post an update on this from San Juan or during the cruise, if this would be helpful. Otherwise, I can post any updates when we are back the evening of March 13th or the next day. Let me know if this would help.

Speaking of trying to stay lean, time for me to get on our treadmill!

The paved part is paving blocks. See this link:

Don't remember what the unpaved part is - I'd guess just dirt and small stones or gravel but I'm just guessing.

Thank you, Larry, for sharing your pictures that helped me recall the start of the walkway. Everyone interested in using the walkway can see from your pictures the fountain/sculpture too, which will indicate they are close to the walkway. Nice pictures. We'll see it in person in a just under 3 months.
