Dances with Moose Posted December 8, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 8, 2008 We are driving, not flying to the cruise port - and I always travel with my Swiss Army knife. Are passengers allowed to bring pocketknives aboard the ship? And if so, must I place it in my checked luggage or can it be in my carry-on? Thanks! Treven Posted December 8, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 8, 2008 Checked luggage only.
cb at sea Posted December 8, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 8, 2008 That's for the plane. If it's allowed onto the ship, you may carry it on.
Arwenmark Posted December 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted December 8, 2008 Actually it is NOT allowed on the ship and if they spot it in xray they will call you to the naughty room. Certainly some people have gotten away with it, but basically that is the rule.
Bran8778 Posted December 8, 2008 #5 Share Posted December 8, 2008 The Naughty Room?? Do we have to pay to get in ??:) I was given a SAK as a gift and also had concerns where I would be able to take it.
Padraic Posted December 8, 2008 #6 Share Posted December 8, 2008 I have always packed my Swiss Army knife in my checked luggage and have never had a problem. Padraic
cruiserbryce Posted December 8, 2008 #7 Share Posted December 8, 2008 I think similar to the plane...you have to put it in the checked bags
45014 Posted December 8, 2008 #8 Share Posted December 8, 2008 Just wondering, why you would need a Swiss Army knife on a cruise ship?
ViolaSwamp Posted December 8, 2008 #9 Share Posted December 8, 2008 Just wondering, why you would need a Swiss Army knife on a cruise ship? My guess... Corkscrew for wine Scissors for snipping wayward threads Knife for opening stubborn packages A few ideas of how one would come in handy. I don't see why they would be forbidden onboard... steak knives and butcher knives are around, you know?
uppitycats Posted December 8, 2008 #10 Share Posted December 8, 2008 You can indeed take a swiss army knife -- but in your CHECKED luggage. And not on/off the ship (you'll go through a security check each way, and it could -- but not necessarily will be -- taken from you, and returned at the end of the cruise.) I took a whole tool-box of tools (I was on a theme cruise where we were building miniatures) in my CHECKED luggage without a problem.

I have never had any probems with my little S A knife, I even take it ashore. It is very usefull, and, less dangerous, in my opinion than a rat tailed comb! john
Padraic Posted December 8, 2008 #12 Share Posted December 8, 2008 Just wondering, why you would need a Swiss Army knife on a cruise ship? Have you seen the tags 'glued' to briefs when done by the ship's laundry? They irritate so I remove them. Unfortunately the only way I have been able to remove them is with the pliers on my Swiss Army knife. Padraic
Traveler353 Posted December 8, 2008 #13 Share Posted December 8, 2008 I wear a little belt pouch when traveling. Always have my swiss army knife in it and have never had any one official take any notice of it. That is not to say that your experience will not be different. eh2zed Posted December 8, 2008 #14 Share Posted December 8, 2008 It does depend on the cruise line. Disney embargoed my combination knife in my checked luggage. I got it back at the end of the cruise.

Bran8778 Posted December 9, 2008 #17 Share Posted December 9, 2008 The SAK I was given is about the size of my pinkie. Should be ok in my checked bag.
Husky61 Posted December 9, 2008 #18 Share Posted December 9, 2008 I can certainly see the danger of allowing someone on board to have a Swiss army knife.:D:rolleyes: Especially when you have access to knives for cabin service or steaks in the dining room.:eek:
cruisinbuddy Posted December 9, 2008 #19 Share Posted December 9, 2008 You mean one like this? $1400.00 at Hamacher Schlemmer . ca He might want it for the little tools in it people. I bring a mini multi tool with me. Geeze he's asking about a swiss army knife, not a bayonet, or the one guy asking about bring on MACE! You never know when your glasses are going to have a loose screw etc.

What difference does it make whether it's in your checked luggage or your carry on? Unlike on an airplane, you have full access to your checked bag as soon as it's delivered to your cabin. Unlike on an airplane, you have full access to your checked bag as soon as it's delivered to your cabin. I didn't make the rules, and don't enforce them. And indeed it's stupid -- we had box cutters, exacto knives, large metal-cutting scissors, all sorts of things that were dangerous. And indeed had immediate access to all of it once our luggage got to our room, and carried the tools around the ship from our room to the rooms where we were working on things, and back. (We were asked to take everything back to our rooms every night, a bit of a hassle). But we were told that so long as it was packed in the checked luggage, it would get through security just fine...and the one person who did try to carry a pair of scissors in her carry-on bag got stopped, frisked, and her scissors impounded. Go figure.
UtterCaro Posted December 9, 2008 #22 Share Posted December 9, 2008 Just wondering, why you would need a Swiss Army knife on a cruise ship? It's a rare day when I don't use those wee scissors for something -- and they're especially useful for removing my cable tie luggage locks. richkinkade Posted December 15, 2008 #23 Share Posted December 15, 2008 I haven't searched the FAQs of all cruise lines, but Carnival, for instance, prohibits only Knives (and scisssors) with blades longer than 4 inches. http://www.carnival.com/cms/Images/Promo_Content/PDF/prohibited_items.pdf I've carried small multitools and swiss army knives in my carryon through security onto Carnival, Holland America, NCL and, most recently (last week) Celebrity cruises and nobody's ever uttered a peep. I use them most commonly to cut cable ties and some more robust luggage tqqgs off of my luggage, and to cut fruit.
BaumD Posted December 15, 2008 #24 Share Posted December 15, 2008 Always take my Leatherman multi tool and have never had a problem. I have heard that scuba divers who take dive knives have them held by the cruiseline and can get them released when they go diving on one of the islands, then must return them until they get them back the last night. Putterdude Posted December 15, 2008 #25 Share Posted December 15, 2008 I carry a very small folding "Buck" knife which is about 2" long, I pack it in checked bagggage for the flight and after that I carry it in my pocket without a problem.
