Without a doubt, and by all means, do the Doubletree Hotel. Service is wonderful, and it's a lovely property. We first tried the Crowne Plaza, but service was awful. From then on, we will only use the Doubletree. And they have a comp shuttle to the San Pedro pier..Enjoy!:D

Any suggestions on where to stay near the pier in San Pedro/Long Beach. We will be flying in the day before...We have transportation from the airport to hotel, but not from hotel to pier.

Do yourself a favor and book a room in the area they call The Pike in Long Beach. (We stayed at the Hyatt Regency.) The Pike area is full of hotels, restaurants and shopping, it's a great place to spend a pre or post cruise day or two. And it's a short 6 or 8 minute cab ride to the pier.

To the contrary, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza in 2008 and had a great time with no issues with the hotel or its personnel. In 2008 we did the LA-Hawaii round trip and went 3 days early and stayed at the Crowne Plaza the whole time. Enterprise Car Rental is now located in virtually the same building, just around the corner, so getting a car is very easy. You can see the ship, from your room in the hotel, when it's parked at its spot on the pier.

The hotel is also within walking distance of a great Mexican restaurant that sits at water's edge.

Yesterday we booked a 15 day Panama Canal for 2010, LA-Ft. Lauderdale, and we will once again go early and stay at the Crowne Plaza.

I guess anyone can have a bad experience at any hotel at any given time. Fortunately for us, ours was good.

We were very happy with the Crowne Plaza last January. Service was very good to excellent with the exception of the desk clerk when we checked in. She was very bored and unresponsive to any questions. Basically here's your key, leave me alone. When our room was not up to our standards I called the desk and got another clerk. She upgraded our room to the concierge floor, and the valets etc. were very friendly and great to work with. One perk of this hotel is being able to see the ship as she sails in the next morning.

If you like sea days, you'll love your cruise. We had a great time on the Diamond, and we're planning to do that trip again in another year or so.

we have used the doubletree multiple times and it has always worked out nicely. They do have a shuttle to the pier and some nice package options that include breakfast, champagne or just the room itself. Just booked another night at the end of the month for $129.

We had a lovely stay at the Crowne Plaza for our Hawaii R/T cruise on the Diamond. There was a nice park-n-sail package for $190 for the conceirge floor, which included 15 days of parking, breakfast, and a bottle of wine. Car was parked underground by valet and completely safe for our 15 days. They had a nice breakfast in the morning downstairs and they had complimentary vans to and from the pier.

I do remember checking the prices at the Doubletree and they were similar. Have a great time on your cruise... you will love it and the sea days.

In March, 2008, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza and were very happy with the service and the room. We asked for a package that included a ride from LAX to the hotel, then to the ship the next morning.

Like one of the other posters mentioned, there is a great Mexican Restaurant just a couple of blocks from the hotel, right along the water. Our neice who lives North of LA loves it so much that they drive down (about an hour) to eat there on a regular basis.

We got up early the morning of our cruise and walked over to see the ship just as they started to let the passengers off. It was exciting to know that we were getting on it in a couple of hours.

Our shuttle to the ship from the hotel was very nicely done. The driver was friendly and got us to just the right spot to hand our luggage to the pier's luggage handlers. Be sure you take singles along to tip the driver and the porter.

Overall, I would rate our experience at the Crowne Plaza as EXCELLENT!

Enjoy your trip...Marsha

We stayed in Crowne Plaza, San Pedro for 4 nights pre cruise on the Regal back in late August 2007. It was very good. If you are there on a Thursday night, complimentary harbour cruise with drinks and snacks is offered to all guests, (not sure if still on, ask!) Also complimentary van shuttle from hotel to ship. Restaurant in hotel ok and others nearby, plus maritime museum, port of call village and we also visited a WW2 cargo ship in the port, cannot recollect the name. Bus stop to Long Beach is outside hotel, well up the hill and we took the local bus into Long Beach to visit Queen Mary and the Russian Sub alongside, well worth a look. We spent about 5 hours on the old QM, great.

I found San Pedro an interesting little place.

Yes I do recommend the Crowne Plaza.
