katmu Posted January 15, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 15, 2009 Would this dress be dressy enough for one of the cruise elegant nights on Carnival Valor? Mine is black instead of the brown shown in the photo. I'm trying to pack light but I want to be appropriate. Here's the current dress code policy: Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sport coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so. Ladies - Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses; if you‘d like to show off your evening gowns, that's great too! Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Elegant dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, T-shirts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, jeans, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear, and baseball hats. TrqoisWtrs Posted January 15, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 15, 2009 Seems fine to me. You could dress it up with some nice jewelry too.
cb at sea Posted January 15, 2009 #3 Share Posted January 15, 2009 On Carnival, that will be fine. On other cruiselines, it's not really "eveningwear", but you could wear it.
retiredude Posted January 15, 2009 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2009 Personally i think you need to take a few more things into consideration here. Color of youre hair( dress as is looks great) accesories you will wear, and of course some type of heel
katmu Posted January 15, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted January 15, 2009 Dark brown hair, pale pale porcelain skin. Black evening jewelry, patent leather pumps and probably a black wrap.
the_dylaness Posted January 15, 2009 #6 Share Posted January 15, 2009 I wonder if strappy sandals (perhaps metallic ones, or ones with some sparkly jewels or sequins) wouldn't take it up a couple levels rather than patent pumps?
Martini Mom Posted January 15, 2009 #7 Share Posted January 15, 2009 I like the fabric. It looks like the type you could wad up in a ball and it wouldn't wrinkle. Perfect for packing. I would put on some sparkly jewelry and sexy heels to dress it up.
katmu Posted January 15, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted January 15, 2009 I have 2 pairs of evening shoes, but I'm worried that on a cruise ship they might fall into the "fall and break my neck" category. 1 is an open toed glittery D'Orsay pump and the other are a pair of bronze metallic crystal sandals. Neither are very walking friendly though.
retiredude Posted January 16, 2009 #9 Share Posted January 16, 2009 I agree i would do a 4 inch sandal with straps in metallic. or bronze
lhanson38 Posted January 16, 2009 #10 Share Posted January 16, 2009 I love the dress I would wear it in a heart beat. But not on formal night .That a great dress for dinner any other night I always wear a dress or skirt for dinner. Leigh
katmu Posted January 16, 2009 Author #11 Share Posted January 16, 2009 Ok, well the consensus seems to be that maybe I need to find something more formal. Any good ideas on where to look for evening wear that is easy to pack?
susiefay Posted January 16, 2009 #12 Share Posted January 16, 2009 Katmu, great dress! We were on the Carnival Victory this past June, and very few people were in traditional "formal" attire. They have really toned it down and I think this dress would be perfect. Have a great time:D

iheartbda Posted January 16, 2009 #15 Share Posted January 16, 2009 Why are people bringing hair color, etc. into the mix? The OP asked if the dress was dressy enough for elegant nights on Carnival, not whether it would look good on her.;)
twooley2 Posted January 16, 2009 #16 Share Posted January 16, 2009 I think what looks dressy on one person can look washed out on another. this being said yes anything can work if it falls under the dress code per say. A dress can be considered dressy or career dressy. This seems to fall under both
katmu Posted January 18, 2009 Author #17 Share Posted January 18, 2009 Would either of these 2 be better? I've been hunting all over town trying to find something that I might be able to wear at other times too. I found these online again though. This one is very similiar to one I tried on today, but the local store didn't have my size. It comes is this color or sapphire blue. Or this one in the teal. Silvery Seas Cruiser Posted January 18, 2009 #18 Share Posted January 18, 2009 Both are lovely dresses for elegant night. You could get by with the first one (The brown one in black) too.

Katmu, I think that the sleveless one is the dressiest of the three you've posted. The other two could easily be worn to the office or a business event, the sleeveless one couldn't. The two long sleeved ones- especially, the first one you posted in your initial post, are good looking but are better suited for a less formal evening. That said, Carnival has very relaxed guidelines, and if you wore the first one, you would be more dressed up than some, and less dressed up than others. So, if you're struggling with budget and/or time limitations, you can certainly wear the first one, add some nice sparkly bling and a pair of black patent peep toe pumps (and if you've got shapely legs, a pair of black fishnet hose) and you'd be absolutely within the wide window of what's acceptable. But if you prefer to be dressed more "special", and with more pizazz, I'd definitely go with the sleeveless one. But again, don't drive yourself crazy. You can feel confident and comfortable in any of them.
Jane110 Posted January 18, 2009 #24 Share Posted January 18, 2009 dont mean to hijack the thread but can someone tell me if this dress is fine for carnival in July This looks like a formal "Santa's Helper" dress, so I would limit it to functions in December. hapi2cruz Posted January 18, 2009 #25 Share Posted January 18, 2009 You will see all types dresses on formal night. Some very formal and some semi formal or even church appropriate. The 1st black dress is definitely fine. The important thing is to wear what you are comfortable with for the evening. Like others said the right shoes and jewerely. But be sure to wear shoes that are comfortable.
