Don't want to do Berlin

I wanted thank Heinbloed. I used the Email address and german text he gave and added english at the bottom. I had a response the next day from Hertz confirming my reservation and that the car would be at the terminal for us to pick up. Now we are just deciding where we will go, but at least we have transportation to get where ever that may be. This Garden event might be something my mom would like.

Are the boards working strangely for anyone else? I posted here this morning and it's gone now. So, here goes again ...

The Emerald Princess is in Warnemunde on a Monday. I had been very interested in going to the BUGA (BUdesGArtenschau = Federal Garden Show/Festival) and tour the Schwerin Castle. The castle is closed on Monday. Will the BUGA be enough to keep us busy for the day? Are there other things in the area closed on Monday that we should be aware of? TIA

Monday is a typical museum closure day. In Cities with more than one museum they try to keep one day closure on different days.

BUT... the first ship in Warnemünde in 2009 is on May 01, 2009 and the last September 30, 2009 (except BLACK WATCH on December 15, 2009)...

In the summer season from April 15 until October 14 the castle is open daily. It's only in the winter season that the castle is closed on Monday....

And I see EMERALD PRINCESS on a Monday only on July 13, 2009. Therefore I do not see any problems to visit the castle.

Therefore I am little surprised on your remark:

http://www.schloss-schwerin.de/schwerin/english/schwerininfo.html

BUGA - if you have nice weather... yes... of course... especially if you love flowers and parks...

if it is bad weather... no...

You can do a Lake Cruise on the Lake of Schwerin to kill time...

or you combine it with something else... like another town:

Check here:

Maybe you want to combine Schwerin with something else.

Thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding. I got some incorrect information from a tour company website. Whew! I'm glad the castle will be open. Now I need to formulate a Plan B in case the weather is too bad for visiting the gardens.

Thank you!!! This is excellent information.

Can you offer some advice on timing our day trip to Schwerin? How long is the train ride from Warnemunde to Schwerin? How much time should we allow at the castle and surrounding neighborhood? And, you may not know the answer to this one but: Are there any Volksmarches around the castle?

Can you offer some advice on timing our day trip to Schwerin? How long is the train ride from Warnemunde to Schwerin?

of course:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2009/01/warnemnde-germany-lbeckschwerin-train.html

Scroll down for orange sector.

Tutorial to buy the day passes will follow. Still in progress.

How much time should we allow at the castle and surrounding neighborhood?

There is a connection 08.37 hrs from Warnemünde but this would mean stress.

Just have breakfast on board.

Get down from ship.

Walk around Warnemünde and have a cup of coffee or a fish-roll:

http://heinbloed-cruiseguides.blogspot.com/2008/12/warnemnde-germany.html

You arrive at lunch time in Schwerin.

Go have first lunch.

13.30 hrs starts your visit of castle

14.30 hrs maybe a lake cruise

15.30 hrs walk trough the park (BUGA 2009)

16.30 hrs walk trough town and Cathedrale and some shopping before your train returns - and you are right back for dinner on your ship.

I think it's a stressfree shore excursion.

And, you may not know the answer to this one but: Are there any Volksmarches around the castle?

Are you talking abour public running events???

Heinbloed, thanks again for the great info.

Here is a link about Volksmarching:

http://www.ava.org/What%20We%20Are%20About/vmfaq.htm

It's a great way to see interesting places.

What a pity: You will just miss it for few days.

On July 4, 2009 there is the 5-lakes-walk for 10 km. It's more fun than race.

http://www.fuenf-seen-lauf.de/

Here are all Sports events in Schwerin:

http://www.stadtsportbund-schwerin.de/index.php?veranstaltungen___termine

Maybe you want to change your cruise itinerary...

And here to find the suitable ship for the suitable date:

http://www.rostock-port.de/kreuzschifffahrt/anlaeufe/anlaeufe_2009.html

So you need to change to BLACK WATCH of Fred Olsen Cruises to participate on July 4, 2009...

I wanted to echo this thanks to Heinbloed who was nice enough to call the Hertz office (I didn't get an e-mail reply) and confirm our rental car.

For a different idea and if you're a history buff (Heinbloed chime in if you know of this), we thought we'd head over to Peenemunde and see the launch site of the V1 and V2 rockets. I understand there is a museum/exhibit there. Heard from someone else that they visited it and found it interesting.

For those of you who might consider a car rental for a loop trip to Lubeck as HeinBloed suggests in an earlier post, it is really quite easy to do and driving around the Mecklenburg countryside there is a pleasant change from the big cities and constant parade of churches and museums on the other Baltic stops.

You can pick up your car from a Hertz "desk" inside the terminal building at Warnemunde (I think you must reserve it specifically from the St Petersburger Strasse Hertz office in Rostock and they will deliver it to the Warnemunde port for you--I don't think the other listed Hertz offices in Rostock will necessarily do that for you, but HeinBloed can confirm that).

We took our time along the backroads on the northern portion of the loop in the morning, going through Heiligendamm and Wismar, then into Lubeck for late lunch and Niederegger's for dessert. Also a nice town square in Lubeck to hang out in and people-watch. Then we took mostly autobahn on the southern portion of the route back into Warnemunde, with a long late afternoon stopover in Schwerin. Huge golden castle there, which really gleams in the late afternoon sun. Then, back to Warnemunde, with very easy dropoff of the Hertz car in the terminal parking lot.

Viel Spass und guten Reisen !

I reserved a VW Golf or similar with Hertz for 11 May using the Rostock St. Petersburger Strasse office and included that I was arriving by "cruise ship." Does that automatically mean that it will be dropped off in Warnemunde or do I need to communicate with someone? I would really like to know before I get there.

We plan to take the ferry to Rostock. It's a beautiful Hanseatic city and easy to access from Warnemunde. We figure it should be a relaxing day - stroll and visit the maritime museum and the brewery - hey life is good! Plus Warnemunde itself is a holiday resort town so having time to walk on the beach or visit a cafe or pub makes for a laid back day, especially when some of the other ports are going to be go go go pushing to see so much so fast.

VW Golf or similar will be at Hertz at Warnemunde at 0800. Then off to Schwerin for a while, Wismar and maybe Bad Domeran on the way back to the ship. Kicking back and enjoying the area!

So HeinBloed's directions worked perfectly? I may end up doing the same thing when we're in Warnemunde. I'd really rather just get a driver, but the only sites I can find in English want about $1100 for a car and driver for a full day! I'm sure we could just find a cab on the dock and strike a deal, but I'd rather not leave it to chance like that.

With your Hertz rental, are you botherign with an International Drivers License? I've done that in the past, but have no idea whether it really is helpful.

Have you checked this site:

http://www.m-vp.de/2465/english/preise2.htm

10 hours for 520 EUR less than 1100 USD...

8 hours Schwerin is just 250 EUR with a taxi driver...

That's much less than 1100 USD.

Heinbloed, would you mind getting us price ideas (euros) for the train schedule from W. to Rostock (one way) per person late July and then the ferry ride back from R. to W. Also, return price on the train per person.

Greatly appreciate your help!
