glacier hiking from anchorage or seward

My favorite is probably Matanuska Glacier which is a couple hours north of Anchorage. It’s best to pay for the tour which gives you the gear and a guide. You don’t need to do that and can hike on the glacier without but if you want to venture very far back you’ll need the guide.

Bryon Glacier is near Portage Glacier. It’s an easy short hike of about one mile from the boat launch area at Portage. It’s known its abundance of ice worms mainly because it’s such an accessible glacier.

I too have trekked Matanuska Glacier and also recommend a guided tour. You will get much farther and have more opportunities for access with the proper equiptment. There is also a guiding company for Exit Glacier. So book this where you have the most time.
