Disembarking at end of cruise

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find anything doing a search.

 

 

On your last cruise day and are in port, how long are you able to stay on the ship? The reason I ask is that our flight isn't until late afternoon, and we would rather stay on the ship for a while than hang out in the airport most of the day. Trying to meander around Miami with carryons isn't our idea of fun.

The lastest I have seen is 10am. Remember there is a ship full of people waiting to get on, just like you wanted to get on early so do they.

The latest I have been able to stay on board is between 10

and 10:15. You need to request at Guest Relations to be in

the very last group off the ship. And to be honest, that is quite

late. They really would like everyone off before 10.

 

Those folks on the next sailing want to step on board as soon

as they are able;).

The only exception I have ever seen to this was on Princess in Tahiti--it was so odd! I guess all the flights back to the states leave at night, so even though you have to be out of your cabin by, say, 10AM, you can stay on the ship the whole day! They have an area where you can drop your carry-on things, then you are free to eat, swim, drink, gamble, whatever! Then the shuttles come and get the old passengers at about 6PM to take them to the airport, but all the new passengers are onboard too--it's the oddest thing. It was way too hot and humid for us to just sit in port, and we had already seen Papeete, so we walked down the dock and took the ferry over to Moorea for the day, rented a car, drove all the way around the island one direction, then turned around and drove all the way back the other direction, then took the ferry back to the ship. Lots of fun but very different from normal debarkation!

 

Princess is not doing that cruise any longer--quite a shame as we had a GREAT time!

Also keep in mind that other than having breakfast, there isn't much to do that last morning. The bars are closed, the pool is closed, the shops and casino are closed, no activities or entertainment. There actually is likely more to do at the airport than on the cruise ship once you finish breakfast!

Hi Gonzo...its really nice to sit outside upstairs AFT:) of the buffet.

There might not be much going on, but I would take sitting out

there over sitting in the airport;)

You may wish to consider a post cruise ships tour if available. This worked for us quite well last weekend at Ft Lauderdale and deposited us with luggage at Miami Airport. Did not have to pay a $90 cab fare either. !!!

thanks for all the responses. I figured that they would "clean house" fairly quickly, but that helps us in terms of figuring out what to do the rest of the day. I'm fairly sure that once we get to the airport we should be able to check in, so the only luggage we will have is carry on stuff.

 

 

I'll make sure to see if we can be part of the last group off, I just didn't want to disembark at like 8 a.m. then wonder what to do with myself for most of the day.

We're usually not in a big rush to leave either. We found the best routine is to plan on having breakfast in the dining room the last morning, and usually head down about 1/2 hour before the end of breakfast. It is much nicer than the buffet the last morning - the buffet becomes a real zoo when everyone is trying to eat at the same time.

 

We'll usually get all packed up just before breakfast. The cabin stewards are sometimes anxious to get started since they have so much work to do that day so we stash our carry on in the closet and make sure it is OK to leave them for a while - also let them know they can get started on the room if they'd like. After breakfast we pick up our stuff and visit with a few friends around the ship before departing. Usually we get off a while after our color is called - which makes finding your luggage much easier.

 

At some ports if we have a late afternoon flight we'll either rent a car for the day (works out great in Ft. Lauderdale) so we can get picked up by the rental shuttle at the pier and store our luggage in the car while we explore the beach and have a nice lunch. At other ports, like San Juan, we've tried stopping at one of the hotels and checking our luggage with the bellman and sitting in a poolside restaurant for a while. We've had mixed success with this as some hotels aren't too agreeable about watching the luggage nor having you use their facilities - even if you're buying food & drinks by the pool.
