bye bye Hawaii Superferry!

Just saw on the news that the Hawaii Superferry ended service today and will be leaving Hawaii. Lasted 1.5 years and did around 900 voyages.

That's too bad! I never was on it, but it was a definite on my list of things to do if I ever got a chance.

Actually, the whole thing is kind of sad. Had it not been for the Hawaii Supreme Court, it would still be running. 200+ people out of work. Very sad.

That is really sad. We were hoping to take that ferry some day. So sorry about the lost jobs too. I wonder where that boat will go. It looked like a great and fun way to get to Maui - much better than the airport hassle. That's a real bummer!!

The boat will be heading to Alabama, from there, who knows. Perhaps, when the EIS is finished, it might come back. Aloha Alakai.

Hello...

 

Does anyone know the reason for the closing? The last time we were in Hawaii (Maui) there was some concern about what the effect of the ferry would be on the whale population. Does anyone know if it was closed for environmental concerns or other reasons?

I remember some people said the Superferry was NCLAs doom. Talk about timing..I saw the ferry arrive in Hawaii with its water salute and got to see its last sailing.

This is just so sad. I was hoping to take the ferry this coming June.

Superferry owners are appealing the State Supreme Court decision. You can pull up interesting articles in the Honolulu Advertiser newspaper.

Apparently they ran it before the environmental reports were back. And yes, it was due to concern about the whales.
