which airport for Harwich?

Recommended Posts

Gatwick or Heathrow to go to Harwich, please?

Both are awkward.

Geography...

LHR is 20 miles west of London

LGW is 30 miles south of London

Harwich is 60 miles north east of London

By private car, LHR is the easier transfer. If you're trying to do it by train/bus/etc,

LGW; train to London Bridge Station, taxi to Liverpool St Station, train to Harwich

LHR; train to London Paddington Station, taxi to Liverpool St Station, train to Harwich

While the intra-london transfers could be done by subway, it's probably easier by taxi rather than hauling luggage up and down escalators. LGW trains also go to London Victoria station, but London Bridge is much closer to Liverpool St.

Probably not applicable, but the best airport is not Heathrow or Gatwick but Stansted, about half the distance to Harwich than Heathrow or Gatwick and the 'right' side of London.

Unfortunately the scheduled Transatlantic flights were pulled from here last year, though you may get charters from Florida or Canadian cities. Its basically now London's main low cost budget airline airport. If you want an 'interesting' route changing to a low cost operator in somewhere like Dublin or Iceland it might be worth thinking about.

Stansted would still require a private car, or ride the train into London and back out. However, as Handfordr is pointing out, it is closer to Harwich. Mind you, of all of the five london airports, Heathrow and Gatwick are the two furthest from Harwich.

From Stansted there is a regular airport bus service to Colchester Railway Station. From Colchester, trains run to Harwich International Station adjacent to the cruise terminal, hourly and in less than 30 minutes.
