lel5344 Posted April 9, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 9, 2009 Barbados is a port of call for our next cruise (if all goes well). We're not heavily into adventure or guided tours. So we'd appreciate some of your thoughts on things to do and see within walking distance of the pier (if that's doable). Local sightseeing (historical sites, intriguing buildings, photo opportunities), shopping (art galleries, local crafts), dining establishments (for lunch). We'll be posting the same question on the other boards for this itinerary, so don't be surprised if the inquiry looks familiar. As always, thanks so much! Aplmac Posted April 9, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 9, 2009 Sounds like you should follow the rest of the crowd you see walking out the Port's gate and heading for the shopping area in Bridgetown proper. On the way there is Pelican Village, where handicrafts and suchlike is available. Continuing into B'town proper, you'll either get to the Boardwalk, to your right or the main shopping drag Broad Street on your left. There's an Art Gallery within the one block of bldgs. that separates the Boardwalk and Broad Street so either route should find you that.. and just poking around the waterfront area, up to the bridge with the arch will find you something to do for the morning, I'm sure. Lotsa people do just that. When they're done, some get a taxi back to the Port but you might want to stick a Twenty in his hand and ask him to drive you around somewhere until the money runs out,at the entrance to the Port. _____________________________________ I'm a bit like this myself, when I'm cruising.. I'll go ashore and mosey around for a half-day and get back to a pleasantly-empty ship that's all mine for a few hours and have Lunch on board. Say after me - Half-day's ROCK! --- ;) :) . jlines Posted April 20, 2009 #7 Share Posted April 20, 2009 We also like to do things on our own so we rented a van for 7 people and in spite of rain and cloudiness most of the day we had a great day. The roads aren't marked very well but are in pretty good shape. We started with a drive up the Atlantic side and watched some surfers at Bathsheba beach. Then we went to the wildlife reserve that's across from Farley Hill Park. This was definately one of the highlights of our trip. There are tortoises roaming everywhere, deer (including a very young fawn) that didn't run away, many tropical birds, a huge python, and iguanas. The best was the family of green monkeys that we watched interacting for awhile. We then proceeded to the marine park for some great snorkeling. If you think you can handle driving on the left, do it!
