Nervous about first cruise as a Non-Smoker

Congratulations! We were on a Celebrity ship in December. The new smoking restrictions were great. I realized when we took a HAL cruise last month how nice it was to be able to walk through the casino and not feel like I needed an immediate shower.

Suggestion for you. A regular poster on the RCCL boards quit last year. She started saving the money that she would've spent on cigarettes - on her last cruise, she used that money to buy a very, very nice pair of earrings. If you start putting back the money you save, you could pay for a cruise or a nice gift to give to your wife as incentive for her to quit.

Heck, if we both quit we could finance a Seabourne cruise! Now that's my kind of incentive.

sitting in the casino or in a bar with a drink in your hand is the absolute worst time when you are trying to quit. hang in there and be tough. best of luck.

I couldn't agree more. I had quit for 6 months when we boarded the Noordam in 2007. It was about 4 or 5 days into the cruise, and we were sitting at the martini bar after dinner and all of a sudden I wanted a cigarette sooo badly. They were selling individual packs behind the bar, & even though they didn't offer my brand, I bought a pack anyway.

My SO strongly suggested I don't do this....but I said "only one". Well, long story short...by the end of the 11-day cruise I was smoking about a half-pack a day & had purchased 2 cartons of my own brand on the ship to bring home. I have since tried quitting twice more with no success. The next "stop date" is mid-May.

It's really really tough. Good luck!

Of the mainstream lines, I'd also suggest you consider Celebrity - they have just implemented a round of tighter smoking controls so you'd be in the position of having to avoid only a few areas.

Slightly more upmarket is Azamara which has only a couple of designated smoking areas, everything else is smoke free.

Otherwise, there are certain areas on most ships which you steer clear of, but that's not a lot of fun.

Congratulations!! Good job!

Go stand somewhere where there are a lot of nonsmokers. The dirty looks you'll get from everyone who despises smoking should deter you enough. Haha.:D

Hey, I finally did it!!!! Two weeks under my belt now as a non-smoker. Never thought I'd be able to kick the habit, and am now both excited and a little trepedatious about booking my first cruise as one of THEM. I've alwaysliked HAL in the past, but am contemplating trying a line that's a little more smoke restrictive. Any suggestions? DW hasn't quite kicked it yet, so I don't want anything too restrictive, just a line where I'll not be seduced by the smoke wafting out of the bars or casino. Hey, I've got to do something with the 5K a year I'll be saving! Take that, tax man!!!! :D

P.S. I promise not to EVER get militant about it. Have tried some riteous indignation on DW in jest, but she didn't find it funny at all.

Congratulations I too have finally did it . Its been 4 weeks for me and I know that its going to be fine. when I get on the ship next week because It wont run my life anymore, trying to find a place to sit wondering if the smoke is going in peoples faces. I was a smoker for 35 years woke up and said thats it and I have not picked one up again. ya i know its been only 4 weeks but I can say I will never go back. I am loveing it not being a smoker.

Sheesh!!! That's EXACTLY what I'm affraid of. It's tough enough with my DW still puffing away. Sitting at a smoking bar would surely be my kryptonite.

Stay strong. Perhaps go to alot of shows where no smoking is permitted. That's easier said than done...we're bar- & casino-type cruisers ourselves :o. Good luck!

Just stay on course. You didn't come this far to fail. You'll encounter all kinds of situations, on cruises and on land, that will test you but think of it. Do you really want to repeat the last two weeks? Those are the hardest of all. Should be enough to deter you.
