Golden in drydock

Princess' website has details. Basically it's getting the same makeover that the Star got. If you look at the deckplans for the Star you'll see what the Golden will be like.

The drydock is being done in Victoria BC, and her next sailing is on May 5/09 a 4 night Alaska sampler (that my mom, 2 of her GFs, uncle and family are all on).

I hope the drydock goes better than CB's fiasco.

We are on Golden May 16 and delighted that they are adding the International Cafe and Sushi and Wine Bar and turning the atrium into the "Piazza".. that area of the ship, with the International Cafe, is a wonderful venue!

I see that they fixed your posting amounts. It was kind of funny to see you with 12. ;)

Golden in LA tonight and will be heading up the coast the next couple of days to Victoria BC for her refit. That would be great if any of our fellow Victoria CC members can get a few pictures when she is "High and Dry":-)

PS Thanks "NCarolina" (formerly host Caroline) for all your hard work keeping us posters in line. Keep on cruizin!

I can't find this on the Princess website and am obviously not looking in the right place... I even did a site search and came up with nothing. Could you link to the info please??? Thank you!

I would love to see pictures if they could!! I think it would be fascinating to be able to see all of this fall into place in such a short time... and hopefully it will bec. we sail Golden in 4 weeks

And thank you, guys, for the kind words.. it's been a pleasure but now I'm ready to be "one of the guys" (or girls, I guess that is) and have some fun.

well I'd hope May 4th, as the ship needs to position to Vancouver so that my mom can leave on her cruise on May 5th. I guess technically it could leave Victoria early morning on the 5th and still be in Vancouver for boarding by noon.

Vicki,

I actually made them myself by finding the pictures online and using photoshop to put it together. I can do one for you if you would like.

Here is a short article from the Montreal Gazette:

http://www.montrealgazette.com/travel/Three+cruise+ships+Victoria+refit/1481438/story.html

I am on the Golden in May... I hope there aren't problems like what I read about the Caribbean!

Thank you so much, very interesting. I am surprise to read the ship is actually getting 30 more cabins!

We got off the Golden in L.A. yesterday morning. Just one word of caution from a 15-time cruiser - take warm clothes, extra sweaters. This is absolutely the coldest ship we've ever been on. We took to calling her "the freezer ship"! We packed a windbreaker and one sweater for Hawaii and wore them every single day. Some people bought sweatshirts on board.

From what we learned on board (and experienced first-hand): They have already gutted the wedding chapel over the last week or 10 days. We were located right above it and could hear saws and hammering. The casino closed several days before L.A., so the gamblers were not happy. Apparently a couple dozen additional cabins are being added (passengers were already dodging large sheets of wood being brought in from below decks). Furniture in the dining rooms is being replaced (it needed it). The wait staff is apparently getting new uniforms too.

As a hot natured person, I am very happy to read that the Golden was cold. Cold to most people is still too warm for me. And I am glad to hear that they got a headstart on the refurbishment since I will be on her on May 9th.

This was the Princess press release on the Caribbean Princess Refit which is pretty similar as to what will be done to the Golden.

http://www.princess.com/news/article.jsp?newsArticleId=na996

The Star Princess' deck plans on princess.com also show what the final layout of the Golden will look like (hopefully)

Opps! Looks like the Princess webmaster updated their deck plans. The Caribbean Princess now reflects what the Golden should look like. The Star never got all the changes they had planned when in SF's drydock but they (Princess) were premature in publishing the new layout. I guess they got around to fixing that little oversight:-)

Thanks for the information. I am going to have to bring a lot of different kinds of clothes than I did on the cruise I did in February in the Caribbean. I am on the first cruise after the refurbishment. I am sorry about all the noise you had on your cruise.

Hi,

It's actually ''scheduled'' to be floated out and get out of the way on May 3rd...So, you should be more than OK. Her '' official '' docking time in Vancouver on 5th May is 7.00am, which means she ,IF all went according to ''cues'' , will actually be in the area on 4th and clock in as a ''ready for inspection'' vessel at the crack of dawn on the 5th.

''Gunning it down'' from the Esquimalt yard location in Victoria to Canada Place Pier in Vancouver can be accomplished is 6-7 hours maximum...so there is a lot of leeways....

Now.....drydock reno works have an almost impeccable record of running short of time, with the ship still remaining a ''construction site '' for at least the first post-drydock sailing....So, just beware: guest on the 4 day sailing to Seattle may find themselves surrounded by yellow offlimits tapes, hard hats, materials, etc....as workers finish the job '' on the go''.

Folks on the last pre-drydock cruises ALWAYS run accross the same inconvenience of on site workers getting a head start....:(

Cheers

:)

We are sailing November 8th out of L.A., anyone know what the closet hotel to the port is? Nice hotels please. I am also interested in cabin information...we have booked a mini suite, but I hear on the Golden Princess they are exposed to the cabins above. Is this true?

Thanks for any advise, 2X cruiser.

You'll get more info on the West Coast Departures board. The Doubletree and the Crowne Plaza in San Pedro (where the LA port is) are both nice. You can go on Priceline (San Pedro 4*) and it should be about $85/night. They are the only 4* hotels in San Pedro so using Priceline in this case is a shoe-in.

Yes, most of the minis on the Grand have exposed balconies. If you can get a minisuite on the Emerald deck, they have covered balconies. Also, the very last mini (E729 I think) has an extra long balcony. It doesn't show on the deck plans but we have been in it and it is great!

If you are in a mini on Dolphin Deck it is fully exposed. We love the Emerald Mini's, the last 1 on each side. Crowne Plaza is the closest to the pier but most all of them have shuttles to the pier. We will be getting off as you are getting on.
