Fairly typical back streets in Marigot

Marigot-79.jpg

It's OK to wander around this little town -we felt quite safe!

Fr.jpg

Just know that many Marigot store-owners close at 1 p.m. for a 2hr. siesta -reopening at 3 p.m.

so you may want to hi-tail it over to Marigot as close to 9 a.m. opening time as possible

and get your Marigot stuff all done by 1 p.m.

before heading back to Philipsburg or beach or wherever else?

This is a good beach across from the ships if someone likes shade as there are palm trees and the boardwalk is right next to you for food and all the shops right behind that. It's a 5 minute ferry ride from the ships. I've been to St. Maarten many times but on this particular cruise in Dec. we arrived late after a wicked storm delayed us and the sunset was gorgeous:)

thank you for the location information. We are trying to decide if we should just take the ferry and visit great bay beach (those pictures are awesome) are take a cab to divi little bay.

for beaching it, go to divi little bay. Not as many boats, ships, etc. As in the bay area.

May 09 This is the boardwalk and Great Bay Beach and you just pick a spot anywhere on the strip. Each color umbrella/chair is a seperate business so they all have a special deal like 2 chairs, 1 umbrella, a bucket of beer for 15.00, or 2 chairs, 1 umbrella 10.00. They set them up for you where you want to be. It's a just a great location to be if you want to be close to everything and you can rent a variety of water toys like jet skiies, mats, etc. and there is beach service for food and drink also. There is a Burger King right by the ferry and a Subway a couple blocks down and 1 block back from boardwalk. There are some casinos too on the boardwalk but I've never been in those. They always have live music set up there also on the boardwalk too. It's just a nice easy location close to everything. Don't forget sunscreen, there is HOT sun in St. Maarten! lol :D

I suppose I have been reading and drooling for over an hour now - this thread is fabulous and I hope more of you post your photos here. We are going on the EPIC next summer -- omgosh -- ALL of those ships in dock! I wonder if we will be along side 6 more or if it's possible our mega ship will be the only one??

I dunno how the islands will handle thousands more.

I can hardly wait to take photos -- I don't have the fancy camear you all do but my photos turn out to please me and I am happy to have them to help me remember!

Thank you so very much for all the help you have provided to give us newbies a heads up on what to expect.

2 things we really want to do is go to the French side first - - and what great advice about the closing of the stores mid afternoon! So the Dutch side does not close? And -- we want to see those planes! LOL We really aren't beach folks except to take photos of the incredible scenery.

Thank you so very much! I have much more to read to get an idea of our 'to do' list but this was a tremendous beginning - I WILL be checking back for more!

Thanks so much for the insights on St. Maarten/St. Martin! Your pictures are just gorgeous!!! I have really enjoyed seeing them.

Is there a reputable jewelry store that sells men's wedding rings? My Husband lost his ring ( Yes HE DID) and our 37th Anniversary is on the day we are in St. Maarten. We have never been here before.I wanted to replace his ring while we are there. Thanks to anyone who knows of one.

When Caribbean Princess docked Dec. 3rd. alongside the new dock at St.Maarten

deepwater dredging was still going on, even at 0650 hrs. when this photo was taken..

2377.jpg

..but the dock itself is largely (if not completely?) ready for action!

2374.jpg

with all bollards and safety markings in place..even two brightly-painted huts

presumably used for shelter, adminstration, whatever..

2376.jpg

2375.jpg

My observant wife remarked that the older dock is noticeably longer than the new dock

2373.jpg

although mooring dolphins might yet be put in place

to extend the effective berthing length?

Who knows?

Without mooring dolphins,

the strategy could be to let Oasis use the whole of one side of the older dock

and let smaller ships avail themselves of whatever berthing length remains available.

As I write this at 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 9th

no doubt Oasis is pulling away from her first docking position at SXM

and the mystery is already solved.

Hopefully, someone will chime in and tell us where she docked

and maybe even post some cool pics for us to see the leviathan in action!

Thanks for the pictures of the taxi cars

Oh yeah that's me! I drive taxis on da islan' (whatever!)

but the real purpose of this post is to apologise for the wrong date I mentioned in my previous post

-it shoulda bin Dec. 8th. (not 9th.)

My motherboard fried two days ago,

and settings like Date and Time were wrong

and I didn't even notice the wrong date.

Not bright,some days.

Great! I didn't know you drove taxi's !!!

We'd like to book with you! hehe... j/k... couldn't resist.

Seriously though, if you did you'd take people to some perfect sites for great photo ops. :)

I've often thought about it.

Maybe some day.

It would be specifically Photo Tours, though

with coaching and pointers -not general island tours..
