hotel in Barcelona, Spain?

My wife and I are looking for a hotel recommendation for Barcelona for sep 30. I've researched the area just a little, and I think our ideal spot would be close to but not right on Las Ramblas. Close enough to get to, but not be bothered by the activity at night if we want to get some rest.

Also, a lot of the recommendations in this thread seem to be for nicer hotels that can be a bit pricey. Does anyone have any "budget" recommendations for a hotel that might be a little more affordable? Our budget ideally would be about $100-150, or less. Any location that would make it easier to get to the port would be ideal.

We stayed 4 nights at the Hotel Inglaterra in early May - 1 1/2 blocks from Plaza Catalunya, great location. Booked advanced internet rate on hotel's own website which included breakfast. Price was reasonable, hotel was spotless clean, room was fine, nice marble bathroom, great breakfast, very friendly, helpful staff. Would definitely stay again, very pleased.;)

We stayed at the Hotel Inglaterra and LOVED it!!! Contemporary rooms, modern bathrooms, street-side balcony, soundproofed windows, friendly, helpful staff. Get a Superior Room-well worth it for the additional space. Excellent breakfast. Book the Internet rate and save. Across the street from the Hotel Jazz. Great Location. Go and enjoy!!!

We've booked a baclony room at The Continental for 115 euros. But I noticed that the room rate with breakfast included at the Inglaterra is 109 euros. Maybe not much of a savings but the hotel looks much better kept and newer than the Continetal. We have lots of time to re-consider and cancel without penalty. Decisions...decisions...

My wife and I are thinking of staying at Hotel Oasis, which is very near the beach, port, AND Las Ramblas and we can book for around $100 US which is around what we'd like to pay. Anyone stayed there and care to share their thoughts? It looks like it gets decent reviews on TripAdvisor, the only complaint being that the AC isn't too strong in certain rooms, but from what I've read that is somewhat common in European hotels.

We have hilton points so can stay free but both Hiltons are not near the port or anything we want to see. Is it worth it to stay free and then use the metro? Is the Metro safe at night or will we need to get back to the hotel before dark? Or is it safe to just catch a cab from the Las Ramblas area at night and get back that way? The metro stops a few blocks from the hotel so during the day we would be fine with that. Just haven't heard from anyone if cabs generally are safe. My vote for lodging otherwise would be Jazz.

We stayed at the Diagonal Del Mar on Points back in 05 and had a very good experience. Up graded both times. Near the subway and right across from a shopping center. A person on the Subway noted I left my camera on the bench and brought it to me. No recent info though lots of good reviews on trip advisor.

Cheers

This thread was really helpful while I was researching hotels!! I just booked the Hotel Rivoli Ramblas on Las Ramblas! It was only EUR 126 or $180 for a double with breakfast buffet! That seemed like an excellent deal since I am seeing rates of EUR 155-180 for Le Meridien, Hotel 1898, Hotel Montecarlo, and Hotel Royal Ramblas. Just wanted to share in case anyone else was still shopping for their hotel!
